Ladies I have beautiful thick hair but I have noticed that my hair mats especially if I wear my twists longer than a week. As thick as my hair is I would love to wear a style for two weeks and then restyle but with my texture I guess I need to restyle every week. My hair is so beautifull when it is detangled but the detangling takes me 1 hour or more. So my question is does anyone else experience this and since you know your hair mats how often do you detangle? I even started putting my hair in sections to wash and detangle and that is a great method that I should have tried a long time ago.

Well my hair is fine and I have lots of hair and I have this same problem.

I keep my twists two weeks and they begin to mesh in that short time.

I detangle weekly in the shower on wash day. Most of the time I put on some kind of pre poo treatment and finger detangle first. I also do 1 section at a time. I think putting in some kind of oil helps to detangle. Also my Aubrey's shampoo is really good too!

I bought some little kids detangler last week to take out my tiny twists because I knew I was up for a real task. Another thing is that after I take all the twists out. I put on the conditioner and sandwich my hair between my hands and rub back and forth (kind of like I am trying to warm my hands). This helps to undo the coils a lot.

This must be something that is normal for most nappies.

My hair is what I consider cottony nappy it doesn't reflect light well and it is thicker than thick. I have the same problem. When I wear twists the longest is two weeks especially if I try to put water to them.

I would love to tell you I have solved the problem but no, I realize I can only wear my hair in twists for that long and then they must be taken down unless I add some type of hair with it.

I am going to try to use my homemade spritz that I got from Scone the next time I wear my own hair twists to see if that alleviates some of the matting. I don't remember the ingredients but you are more than welcome to look on my site and find it and adjust it to your needs.

I am using it with my protective style and when I take down my hair it is way easier and there is no matting with the extension hair, which use to be really bad, to the point I needed to soak my head first and use my trusty debraider and some oil to get it down. Now there is no need.

You are more than welcome to give it a try.

My hair mats very easily unless i comb it through regularly. If I do not use enough oil, if I use too much, if I use a detangler, if I don't...the only thing that helps me is to put it up and leave it alone till next wash. hope this helps. I would love to keep growing it longer, just so I can wear it in a long French braid or two that will stay for a couple of weeks!!

My hair is very thick. It is not possible to comb it without sectioning it. I have to wash it in sections as well. I only detangle on wash day, which varies. Most of the time it's once a week, or once every 10 days. I don't really have the matting problem while my hair is twisted. What are you using to twist your hair? What shampoo and conditioner? I notice that if my hair is dried out and brittle from incorrect product use, it will be a hot tangled matted mess.

I use lock and twist gel. I think it's made by organic root stimulator or something like that. The gel is clear and very thin, almost liquid like. It provides a good hold, yet keeps your hair moist. If I keep twists in for longer than one week, I apply extra virgin olive oil to the ends only one time. In the morning I spritz with water to "reactivate" the olive oil. Some of you ladies may have hair like mine that likes very few products. Less is more with my hair.

i have that problem. i recently took my twists out after having them for about three weeks and my hair was practically loc'd! truthfully, i'm very lazy about doing my hair, but it's so thick and tangles easily, i can't just leave it out. plus it's cold here, so a wash n' go isn't going to cut it. right now i'm wearing my hair in two plaits on the side of my hair .
as far as detangling goes, do you find you lose a lot of hair? i ended up with a good fistful of hair and a sore scalp after three weeks of twists. is that normal?

I experience this too, but I just let it do it's own thing. My hair won't stay detangled for any length of time. I detangle when I wash, usually once a week. I love two strand twists so my hair is in them most of the time. Once I do a twist-out it tangle time, but I only detangle it when I next wash it.

Yes this my hair does mat. The max I can keep my hair in twists is two weeks, and then it is major detangling that has to be done. I do wash it in sections and I detangle a bit with my thumbs while I low-poo. I put in conditioner and run my thumbs through the conditioned sections. I also brush the ends with an ouchless goody brush. I get about two fistfulls of hair and all have the little white bulb on the end. It is shed not broken.
