  • Reliving The Twa: Starting All Over

    Hello, Ladies,

Well, I threw this idea out in the albums sections last night and decided to bring it to this main forum...

...I've been thinking of cutting my hair, again. I mean all of it - using the things I know now about natural hair care I would have healthy, NAPPtural hair and it would be like doing it right all over again, you know? When I cut all my hair off, I was made to feel ashamed, embarrased, and just bad about having short natural hair; so I hid it with twists, braids, and other such "longer" styles. This time I know that I am me no matter how my hair looks so I could be proud! Plus, I took no pictures and I would love to remember how I looked after my big chop - it was a milestone in my life and I want to relive the feeling!

Anyway, I though, what if I documented the journey all over again? Then another hairsistah said she was willing to take the challenge and I got a few others to join. So I thought why not make it an open challenge to those of us who wouldn't mind starting over and documenting our journey - comparing how it goes the "second" (or third or fourth for some members) time compared to the first. It could be an open support kinda thing.

THEN I had another idea - for those of us who have 10 inches of hair or longer, we could donate to Locks of Love and the cut would be for a purpose. I'm sure they need so NATURAL SISTAHS to donate for a little variety, if you know what I mean.

It's just an idea - don't put it down if you don't agree - I know everyone won't. But I would love to hear your opinions and see how many want to take the challenge. Its never as fun if you don't experience it with someone else!

i kinda sorta started over in May, but not with the intent of growing my loose natural hair. i want to loc this time round. i'm trying to decide if i'm gunna wait till the end of summer to allow it to grow and loc.

But i'm ready for another trim. it's approx 1.5 in the top (longest) part of my head.

well, this is my 2nd time around so to speak.

i was butchered back in dec. (went for a trim..came out with a twa)

the one thing that kept me going and positive about starting over..i could now use all the wonderful knowledge i had learned on forum. that is when i also started my hair album. (i had no pictures from the first 15 months)

i had only been natural for 15 months when that happened. i really didnt know what i was doing with my hair and had caused some damage earlier in the year.

    i wish you well!

I'm giving myself 3 more years of growing out my hair or just see how long it will get and then I'm going back to the TWA and it'll be that way til they throw dirt over me!

i wore a TWA and then a fade for 3 years, I've been growing it out since November....So I am in the growing process, but i think the hair donation is wonderful for those who are wanting to start over.

I fit this description. I cut to a twa in March and for the last time in May. I have all intentions of documenting my story so the support will be great! I placed the first of many pics of hair growth in my album earlier this week.

I've been really considering it. Not because my hair is damaged or I feel like I did anything wrong the first time: rocked my TWA unstyled proudly for 6 whole months afterwards. I just love the freedom and ease of the TWA. But 'm not sure... I'm afraid of losing my little growth! But I'll join in if I decide to chop again soon!

I feel like I missed some stuff - I've been up preparing activities for my kids at church. Jazi, girl! I can't believe you already cut! POST PICS, POST PICS!!! I'll be tuning in all weekend for some glances at the beautiful cut!

My big cut is going to be by the end of the weekend. Once I've set my mind to doing something, I do it - it's just finding the time to cut it! Jazi, did you do it yourself? How?

And its going to be a BIG change for me but I'm pretty sure I'm ready to start over! I'm excited for all of you! Keep us posted - let's keep this going as long as our hair is growing!

And might I add, Jazi, you have a gorgeous puff! I love looking at your pics!

Wow! I was thinking the exact same thing. I grew my hair out with microbraids and never got to experience a twa and never had to care for it. So, I chopped today. I have 1 inch all over. it feels good and looks sexy! And now i'm extremely confident and don't worry about hiding my short nappy hair. In fact, I was so happy that I walked home from the salon and got hit on more than ever before!!!

Good luck with your 2nd journey. I'm declining this challenge, I love the length of my hair now at 10 inches and look forward to it growing longer. I skipped the twa stage and really don't have any regrets. Good luck to all who take on the challenge!

this is such a great challenge! i'm no where near 10 inches so i can't help you much. i'm just barely out of my twa days myself. i loved my twa since it was so low maintenance and i though very flattering on me. i hope you enjoy it as much as i did!

Just wanted to say good luck with the challenge ladies. I too am declining as I did the TWA thing this time as well as wore my hair like that off and on for 3 years. I love the TWA but nappy length is the new thing to me. I'll watch from the sidelines and cheer you on.

Well....I'll be doing the Big Chop on tuesday for the first time so i guess i dont' really qualify. But i really would like help in taking care of my natural hair. i relaxed my hair in 2000 and i never really liked it or could take care of it so i want to start all over, with the REAL me. i'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

I am wanting to cut my hair down to a TWA for the second time. The first time was when I had the perm cut off and the stylist just cut off the perm, there was no shape or style to my hair. Then I was pressing it every month for nothing b/c when I started to sweat, my hair reverted. I too felt shame because I didn't have long straight hair. Plus I feel that a new start will mean healthier hair this time around. I too have learned a lot since I went natural 4 years ago. I'm still mulling it over. I am glad to hear that others are thinking the same as me. Thanks for the shoot of confidence.
