  • Questions For Those Who Sell Their Products

    1. Do you have your products challenge-tested?

    2. Do you have product liability insurance?

    3. Are you using the proper type/quantity of preservatives for your products?

    Just wondering.

As y'all know I am planning to start selling my products soon.
I have spoken to American chemists and European chemists who have agreed that the legalities of personal care items are much more stringent in Europe than they are in the USA especially with regards to the questions that you have listed above.

It would be nice to have others who do sell their products also comment so that we can all learn. I don't know everything and I am sure that I must have missed something out.

Anyway, I will try and answer your questions as best as I can based on my current experience:

A sample of the product must be sent to the...

There are so many preservatives out there I have heard of - off the top of my head - Biopein, GSE, ROE, Black Willow Bark, Benzion, Essential Oils, Vitamin C, the stuff that Burt's Bees uses (sorry I forgot the name but I have got a sample), phenoxyethanol, high proof vodka, vitamin e (prevents oils from going rancid), potassium sorbate, etc...
The preservatives I am allergic too include:
UREA, EDTA, PARABENS, Sodium Borate (emulsyfier & preservative which is not seen as favourable in Canada or the EU), Propylene Glycols etc...

Remember to protect the integrity of a product it not only requires the most appropriate preservative but also the correct packaging & labelling (how the product should be used.)

It depends on the ingredients used in the formulation as to what the proper type of preservative is required.

Thanks for the response. I wish more people could add to this discussion because I know of plenty of people on this site who sell their products.

Oh, and thank you both for the compliments!
