  • Praise Be To God!

Hello, all! I've been in lurk mode for a while due to having less time to post like I want. I have an update on a situation that I posted about last year. Last year I began a teaching position at a Christian school but after I was hired, I was told that I wouldn't be able to wear my hair out even though they had never seen it out themselves. So all last year I wore puffs. Well, this year I decided that I needed to try my best to make a change in that situation.

One day, I dressed up very nicely, applied my make-up flawlessly...and *rocked* the fro. All I got were compliments! One of my students even calls me "the beautiful African lady", and I ain't African! *grin* So now I can rock a puff or wear my hair out. The only hair styles that I can't wear are braided ones, for now at least...

ALSO, the best news! No more texturizer!!!!!! Hallelujah!!!!!!! I got a texturizer last November and have grown it out and cut the permed ends off gradually. I am so glad to be 100% natural, again!!! When I get some pictures done, I will update my album. My hair length is shorter than the texturized pictures but it makes me no never mind as I have my hair back!

    Thanks be to God.

Quick question: Did they just come up to you and say you can't wear your hair out or what was that situation?

I have a question: why would a "Christian" school have a problem with natural african american hair or braids?

I remember that post. Happy to hear everything turned out well for you.

Thank you for molding the minds of the future.

Our hair is beautiful ! The longer I wear it natural, the more I could care less what others think. I love this thick kinky hair! God gave it to me and I will celebrate it! I am glad you are wearing your God given crown proudly.

Okay, the situation was like this: I was hired for a teaching job at a predominately African-American, Christian school in Charlotte. After I was hired I was told in a rather embarrassing way that it would probably be better if I didn't wear my hair out as they prefer not to look "too" ethnic. That is why they also prohibit locks and anything more than 9 braids/twists. While I can understand, my Bible says that when God created man he said "it is good". That includes my hair! So anyway, out of respect (though I SEETHED inside), I wore a puff all last year.

Before school started this year I wore my hair out and got many compliments. After school started, I decided to pull a Nike on it and "just do it". Not only did I get compliments, but one of my natural students wears her hair out as well. HA! One of my other students who relaxed her natural hair last year is now growing her relaxer out! Whether that's attributed to me or not, I don't know but I'd like to think so!

By the way, two ladies at my home church have transitioned with me and are now natural. They look great! One of them is almost a hair twin of mine!! It's so good to be back!

    MariposaMorena08,

So sad to hear that those administrator associate perms with Christianity. So glad to hear that the Creator is working on those Chrisitians.

I'll be teaching in a couple of years and am waiting to see what I'll experience with my head full of locks!

I'm very very happy that you just went for it!

Congratulations on reclaiming your God-given texture.

It irritates me when people say "too ethnic" in a negative way. What they're really saying is "too black" and "you shouldn't be proud of who you are."
