  • Nose Jobs And Black People

There was once a time when black people shied away from that aspect of plastic surgery. Now, it seems so many black celebs are doing it...Kelly Rowland, Amerie, Vivica...there's more out there. It's really disappointing because these women were really beautiful before the surgery. I'm watching Amerie on Bet 106 and Park, and it looks like she just took off a clothespin off her nostrils or something. Just what they're aiming to do, I have no idea. I know we all have things that we're self-conscious about. But where do you draw a line?

I know when I was a teenager, I used to think my nose was too big (folks used to say, yup, she got her father's nose...don't get it twisted I I was still cute . But now that I'm older, I appreciate its fullness. It makes me who I am as a woman of African ancestry and I also appreciate the fact that i look like my dad because though I'm now married and my name is changed, his likeness is ingrained in my features and that's something I've passed down to my son as well. Anyway, what do you guys think?

black celebs have been getting nose jobs just as much as white ones do...I remember in the 80's stephanie mills had one, george benson, denzel washington..a few other I cant remember right now..
    halle berry had one too..

you will be hard pressed to find any celeyajoks125y who hasnt had work done either to the face or body.

I agree with you. It's just another example of black folks disliking their distinctly African features and so they feel they have to make a change and "de-Africanize." It doesn't mean I have to hate on them, though. Tina Turner got a nose job and I love me some Tina.

Count J. Lo in as well.

I think it's sad, but at least they ain't gone "Jackson" yet. I wonder if an actress could make it in this day and age with a full nose. I admire Kimberly Elise for hers.

Kelly? Jlo? How do people know? Just wondering.
If they do, fine. Will not make me feel any more or less of myself. I always consider celebs somewhat insecure in general therefore will never compare myself or sue them as a standard to live my life. Hence I never have celebs as my role models.

Don't know about Kelly, but I saw a magazine article that did before/after comparison shots of J. Lo. One during the Fly Girl years, and a more recent one. The nose is significantly narrower.

Yeah I didn't know she had any work done!

As a child I was very self conscious about my full lips. I wanted to alter them some way. I never really got teased but I just felt they were too full. As I got older I grew to LOVE my lips. I had this lady at the MAC counter tell me when she got her lips "done" she was thinking of my lips . Anyhow I'm glad I gave myself the chance to accept myself instead of rushing out to get some surgery. Lots of celeyajoks125ies like Lisa Kudrow, Cher etc. (and regular people) have plastic surgery and regret it.

I dont know what kelly or amerie were thinking, they loked better before....
after halle berry had hers she looked less black and I think that was her goal....she had a cute nose before....

Patti Labelle had one but at least she didnt attempt to make it look like a "white nose" which would have looked ridiculous.

There was once a time when black people shied away...

When was that? Do you have any examples??

Quite a few celebs have plastic surgery done, my guess is that their mostly white (because they are the majority in Hwood), but I don't see why blacks or any group should be expected to get less plastic surgery.

If you go to Hot Ghetto Mess , you can see the evolution of Kelly Rowland's nose. _headshake:

I admire Garcelle Beauvais for keeping hers too. I never saw her in a movie, but I saw her in a Neutrogena advertising in a magazine, and her nose was just like mine

Stephanie Mills NEEDED to get a nose job. Her original nose was very unflattering to her face. All she did was narrow it a bit not "whiten" it up.

Halle definitely did and it fits her face. JLO is kind of hard to tell, because she was also MUCH bigger in her flygirl days. She could have gotten it done, but like Stephanie she seemed to have just narrowed it a bit.

I didn't know Vivica got her nose done? I know she got her lips and chest inflated, but I thought her nose was always that size. To be honest, I never paid that much attention to her.

I think many of them do it for "camera" reasons. What may look good to the naked eye, sometimes doesn't look quite as nice on screen.

celebs aren't the only ones having body alterations, enhancments or whatevers. I know quite a few friends and coworkers have had nose jobs, boob jobs, tummy tucks and face lifts.

I was thinking about posting a message about this myself....I think its really sad.

I don't look up to celebs in anyway shape or form. But this just helps perpetrate the myth that european beauty is the only way to go...from straight hear to straight noses....its interesting how having a big butt only became highly sort after when a latino woman was sporting one. So if we as napputural women want to be appreciated for our natural beauty we got to wait for yajoks125ney or Christina to an afro looking perm or some sh*t like that. <_<

No Vinny, I don't have examples of when black people shied away from plastic surgery. Maybe I should have said, it's more accepted now. Black culture today seems more apt to look to plastic surgery for that quick fix, which was something that used to be thought of as a "white thing."

Who knows, maybe some black people have always wanted to change their looks all along and never had the means. whatever the desire that draws black celebs and Mary X from around the way to go under the knife to change a feature, I just feel its a sad state of affairs. Whatever happened to features giving character to one's face..... Just my

Yep...just about every star and wanna be star pop or otherwise is going blond and if they were already blond they are getting blonder .... it's not lost on me as to why <_< As long as the Europeans run the industry and the audience they appeal to is Eurowashed .... we will continue to see that same cookie cutter image ...at this point I can't tell any of these folks apart. I have yet to see anyone breaking the neck to go darker rather than lighter... Mandy Moore has went darker......no frenzy behind her no media hyping makes you wonder.....?

Hmm when she doesn't have all that make-up on, her nose looks the same. So I don't know about her having plastic surgery.

But personally I don't care. If the nose job looks good then ok, nothing wrong with definement. As long as there's not the need for the Peter Pan/Michael Jackson type-nose.

I just want to say that Jazitone's signature had me rolling...

Anyway, nosejobs are just another thing "we" do because we hate ourselves the way we are. I was going to get a nosejob a while back. But when I went through my transition (mind and hair) I realized that was not necessary.

I used to get teased by my own family about my nose...

What!?! No one NEEDS to get a nose job unless it is causing some sort of health problems. She was made with a full Afrikan nose and should have been taught to love it. We must learn to love ourselves as we are. What you are saying is a slimmer or "narrow" nose is more attractive. That's ridiculous IMO. She was attractive with her fat nose and gorgeous singing voice.

so did MJ, especially by his father. I'm not saying that is is the sole psych/emotional factor in the change of his appearance, but it's definitely part of it. Joe used to make fun of Michael's "big, ugly nose", on top of his regular abuse. So sad.

Stephanie's nose was extremely large and unattractive. It was spread damn near all over her face. She NEEDED to get it done and it was a good decision, especially in the type of business she's in. Her voice still rocks.
