  • Natural Hair Grows Quicker

Why does it seem this way?? I remember when my the bonds in the hair were permanently destroyed through caustic lye applications, I would die for it to grow, which it never really would. Now that my hair is natural, I feel as if it's already growing, or I could just be buggin' because I just did the big chop two weeks ago .
Anyway, looking at the naptural photo albums, I see that natrual hair seems to grow quicker. Just think, all my life I wanted long hair and I thought bi-weekly trips to the "dominican" hairstylists would help it grow. (New Yorkers know what I'm talking about)
    Any thoughts?

To me..my hair does grow faster now that I am natural. But I think its because now you can acutally SEE the growth, and we are retaining more. I mean dumping those chemicals on your scalp causes breakage, and God only knows what else. So whatever you did grow was proably broken off when you relaxed. But now we get a chance to actually reap the benefits of a healthy head of hair. JMO

when i had the hair and scalp burned with caustic lye just to have straight hair i used to spend so much money and time to have to take care of my hair and grow it out ....No way, at the end it was just lifeless, thin and extremely damaged despite all my efforts.

Now i only have to buy my shampoos, conditioners, gel and voila!! my hair grows very fast without ANY effort.

what a pick me up thread!

yes, my hair is growing faster and more bountiful as a natural. i always knew that but i was mentally and socially enslaved and afraid of being different. it's kinda like when you're smart but most the folks you know are not-so-smart and you don't wanna stand out and get left for being different. *sigh*

i actually have a good chance of growing my hair out to my max now and i feel free. when i had chemically straightened hair i had breakage down to 1/2 an inch or so in patches every now and then. otherwise i had about 4 inches of hair. my hair is mostly 7 inches now from a shaved twa august 02. i hope to grow 3 to 5 more inches. anything more than that is pepper (i luv pepper/spicy foods).

eta: relax with -er ending is giving that eerie long definition of hair that had the hair and scalp burned with caustic lye just to have straight hair with caustic lye just to have straight hair. so i used "chemically straightened" instead.

I don't know if my hair is growing faster, but I certainly wouldn't mind it.
I think that since I've gone natural, I retain the growth and it's a lot easier to observe. When I had the hair and scalp burned with caustic lye just to have straight hair, my hair was so damaged that it would break off and fall out just as fast as it grew, so it never looked as if it were growing. But as soon as I stopped, it looked as if there was a rapid growth spurt.

Length is one my top goals right now and I am amazed at how fast it seems to be happening. I was one of those whose hair never got past the shirt collar when I had the scalp burned with caustic lye just to have straight hair. It seems like I was so stuck on length then that I didn't experiment with styles because I wanted my hair to grow. Now my hair is growing, I can wear different styles and if I get tired and cut it, then I know it'll grow back easily.

Yeah, I think it's because the gollum fire cream causes so much damage. I also think it's because of all the heat & manipulation we add to the old school gollum fire cream for eradicating the hairs that causes even MORE breakage/damage. I can remember combing through my hair repeatedly daily when I had a gollum fire cream, and now I only comb through my hair every 2-3 weeks only when I've got it loaded with conditioner.

ETA - nuttin, I just deleted a lil sumthin

My hair didn't start really growing until I have put braids in it and notice my hair was getting even all over. Back then I didn't connect the dots and kept putting creamy crack in my hair, only for it to start breaking again. Now happily nappy I notice my hair grows faster and I don't have to clip my ends as much.

the censoring kinda irritates me cuz it sounds like the poster is a mindless drone. but then i realized why and now i understand it will help others understand an important aspect of chemical straightening.

texturiz -er is replaced with "napp eradicator"

relax -er is replaced with "gollum fire cream"

relax -ing is replaced with "completely eradicating the hair's texture with burning chemicals"

per -m is replaced with "old school gollum fire cream for eradicating the hairs"

i guess these definitions are subject to change...

Does censoring happen in the Other Topics Area? Suppose you're have a question about those muscle relaxers or you want to talk about a way to spend a completely eradicating the hair's texture with burning chemicals afternoon with your hubby or friends?

ETA: See how silly that looks? So "relaxers" is okay, but "re+lax+ing" isn't?

I chopped to a twa March '03 and now I already got enough hair to sport a BAA! Giving up the heat and chemicals has definitely helped my growth and especially retention. Also, I'm no longer unafraid of the scissors.

Aaaaaaa-men...I'm not going crazy either!!!! Ya'll are so smart cause I didn't know WHAT the world was going on.... ...oh yeah, I know my hair is growing faster due to the elimination of chemicals, detangling once or twice a month instead of combing, and rinsing and wetting my hair with water a lot more frequently.

my hair has grown more in the 2 years since the bc than all the years w/had hair burned with acid just to have straight hair hair. plus all the stuff i did to make my hair grow, the braids, the fake ponytails, didn't make it grow. now that i'm taking care of it and nurturing my hair, it's responding positively and growing. ever since i found this site and finally knew how to take care of my hair it has grown at least 1in i think. maybe i'm just crazy, but if i'm crazy, happy, and nappy, i'm cool

The same here with all the products i bought, visits to the beautyshop when my hair had the hair and scalp burned with caustic lye just to have straight hair from 13 to 26 years old, my hair should have been down my back or (my behind :-cre :-cre )

3 years after the big chop it just AMAZING to see the results. that's why i had to put my album online to inspire those who are still hesitating to stop the madness!!

I don't know if my hair's growing faster, but it's definitely growing & more importantly, I'm retaining the length 'cause I'm no longer abusing it.

I definitely see that my hair is growing faster. Everyone around me say that they can't believe how fast my hair is growing. It is so much healthier.

I just had this discussion with a friend a couple of days ago.

I also think using products that do not contain mineral oil helps a bit.

I think so too. I stopped using the store bought products I'd been using on my dd's hair and I have noticed a significant change in her hair. Before I learned how to make my own rosemary/glycerin spritz and use shea butter, we were using products by the Bronner Brothers - which were fine, but her hair is much softer now and seems to be growing faster. My own hair is thriving as well. Thanks ladies for all the great tips!

I've been reading posts and I was wondering why people were calling "perms" cream.

I think the censoring is pretty funny!

I guess they should explan it when you sign up or something so you'll know.

My BC TWA is about a week old, but my hair is growing and I'm learning about my hair. I love the curls. I still have a little of the chemically fried with lye hair in my head (I want to see that censored). But it's just a little bit in my hair and it blends in nicely with the rest of my hair.

Wow. I have some chemically fried with lye hair in my head.
    Ugh!

I prefer chemically alterated, originality "hated" hair. ('Cause folks seem to "hate" on natural black hair.)

Chemically fried.....lol. That really sounds like sunny side up hair or something to me. I get the point, but dang! (Maybe I'm just goofy, but that's funny to me!)

    *gollum fire cream
    *Relax
    *napp eradicator

Sorry, just wanting to see what happens. Just ignore me. (Late night cramming and taking a study break.)

My hair is also growing much faster without a gollum fire cream. I stopped by to visit my old creamy crack dealer, and even she said that my hair was growing quickly.
