  • Lemon Juice?

A friend of mine told me she overheard a locked brotha say he uses lemon juice on his hair to make it grow. She said his locs were beautiful! Has anyone else ever heard of this?

No, I have never heard of this. I do know that LJ helps cleanse the scalp and rids the hair of buildup, thus making the hair more healthy.

I heard that lemon juice + sunshine = natural highlights.

I tried it and I can see a little lightening when the sun hits it, but I don't think I did it right. I don't think I 1)used enough lemon juice, or 2)stayed out in the sun long enough. I'ma try again this summer!

i've heard that lemon juice also helps the hair to loc--makes the new growth tight. Don't know who true that is though.

:-P My loctitian said to use lemon juice to dehydrate your hair and make it loc faster. Since I have just started, I cannot say that this is true but the others she has started look good. I cannot find any info on it except to help lighten your hair naturally with the sun.

My loctitian said pure lemon juice but it makes my scalp itchy so I dilute it with distilled water and whatever oils I use. Then I use it as a daily spritz.

My loctian told me to spray it on my babies twice a day because it helps soft hair like mine loc a little bit quicker.

I heard about this a while back -I think the lemon juice works similar to the salt mix I made to spray my locs with, it dries out the hair and tightens locs up. I was told by a friend to either use lemon juice (buy it from the shops in ready made version)or sea salt/water mix in a spritz bottle, it would do the same thing. I chose the sea salt. I did try the lemon juice a few times, but I was worried about getting my hair lightened by it over time -it did the same thing.

I really found it helpful at the beginning of my locing stage!

It worked like a hair spray, kept my new locs slightly firmer and it would be part of my styling. I never used it on my scalp though-I tried to avoid that, lemon juice would have the same effect on me too -dry scalp feeling. I used my hands to rub my locs down with the mix.

I also had to dilute both my salt or lemon juice as it was quite drying on the hair if used too often -for me. I sprayed it on only if I wanted to try and style my new locs.

lemon juice out the bottle or lemon juice straight...

...you can buy the concentrated lemon juice in shops (thats what I used, less hassle) but I'm sure lemon juice from a lemon works well too!

Interesting. I've never heard about lemon juice making your hair loc faster. Now, I have heard of it giving you natural highlights.

I have not with the lemon juice. I have wondered about that. I also thought to put some sage oil in it but have not yet. I keep the water and oil mixture room temperature. Anyone else have thoughts on this? :-P

you can use any citrus fruit: lemon, lime, or orange. i was taught to use the actual fruit (not the juice that you can buy at the store), though it may not make a real difference.

it will help your hair loc faster, but if you already have dry hair, then leave it alone, because chances are that it will make your hair brittle. it will also change the colour of your hair slightly if you walk around in the sun with lemon juice in your hair. i also don't suggest using this if your hair is dyed.

and if want to keep it a day or two it would need to be refrigerated.
