  • it rained today in los angeles

    Hi Ladies,

I just wanted to share my joy. Today, it rained in los angeles...not too common an occurence.

For the first time in my life, I didn't even blink twice about it or allow my heart to skip a beat because of fear of ruining my "oh, so fly and freshly permed" bob haircut. Why?

Because I was sporting my "oh, so fly and freshly twisted" natural self... of course.

Y'all it was really a great feeling. I ran to the bank, post office, etc with no umbrella.... just a smile.

My usual teller at the bank is this really nice relaxed sister. she was headed to lunch when i came in but stopped to talk as always... umbrella in hand.

girl: hey girl! how's law school.
me: fine. semester starts on monday.
gir: girl, it's raining! you ain't got an umbrella!!!
me: nah girl, no chemicals! these twists GOT MY BACK!!!

Y'all, we just laughed and she then said, "it's all good! all power to the people!!"

... and it was good.... and i just felt soooo refreshed...

like ice-cube said "TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY!!"... especially for this natural sista.

just wanted to share! hope this post can brighten someone else's day too....

    peace and blessings.....

Isnt it a beautiful thing...to walk to your car while it is raining...and see a permie with a plastic grocery bag on her head...scramble to the car...because she forgot her umbrella...

    Makes you smile :-)

I live in Atl, where you can count on the rain. I never take an umbrella. Natural is all good. I am a twisted poetic sistah myself.

Im in LA too, but I DO use an umbrella when its pouring raining, especially if Im wearing a braid out. When its misty I dont really care. Had a braid out yesterday and of course my hair shrunk a bit, but it was all good. Didnt really disrupt the style at all.

My hair LOVES humidity, thats why I cant wait to get a hair steamer.

I am really feeling this post and I can totally relate. This summer not to long after I did my second big chop, my boss (a local NY politician) hosted a Family Day picnic in one of the local parks in his district. Based on the nature of my business one can image the amount of permies I work with.

Anyhow, there were 150 people eating BBQ, playing games, listening to music and enjoying the day. All of a sudden the skies opened up and it started to pour. All my permie co-workers and volunteers began run and seek shelter. They left the food, games and papers to the men, white women and myself to secure. It was to funniest thing I had saw in a long time. I laughed so hard! I pointed at them too, vigorously ran my fingers through my hair and continued working. It was a wonderful day to be natural; in fact everyday is a wonderful day to be natural.

I modeled my wet curly hair to a few choice co-workers, as they stood there mad, under insufficient shelter. Proud to say that one of those co-workers is currently transitioning.

    Once again, great thread!

Sort of an inverse story. I grew up in Florida where there are tons of beaches, lakes, and swimming pools. When I was young I used to avoid going to birthday parties if my hair was freshly coiffed because watching all my white friends splashing around in the swimming pool while I sat in a patio chair was absolutely no fun.

Oh god. This is even worse. I completely forgot. When I was about eleven I was at a family reunion and me and my cousins were pitching horseshoes. I bent down to pick mine up and one of my cousins pitched his horseshoe a little bit early. Next thing you know I have blood streaming down my face. It hurt so much and I was screaming my head off but it wasn't, "Oh my God" or "Help!" "Help!" It was, "My hair, my hair!" I thought that since blood is liquid, it would ruin my hair just like water does. Granted, I was probably delirious, but isn't that the saddest thing?

I have tons of silly stories like this that I had completely forgotten before coming to this site. It's just amazing to me how all of this behavior used to seem totally normal and worth it, just like RaLuvsRed's coworkers who - lol - ran for cover.

But yay! Now I am natural and free. No more insanity
Mr. :-ba Mr. rain and Mr. :s), you don't scare me anymore!!

    And I agree, great thread!

I'm in LA too, yesterday was my day to go see The Lord of the Rings-- I stopped at my sister's house on the way and she said that same thing,

"did you forget your umbrella"? "Here you may borrow one of mine".

I said no thanks, don't need it! I was wearing a hat and wondered what my sisterlocks would look like after taking the shape of the hat, but then again, I just "shake and go." So when I got to my destination I just did a shake and there you have it!!

    Yesterday was a good day!

awesome thread. It rained as soon as I got out of my car to head to the store and the drops falling on my head felt soooo nice, plus my hair was super soft (happens w/ moisture) and I held my head to the sky so proud to not worry about an umbrella. To my left and right were permies w/ bags on their head AND an umbrella over it looking at me like I was crazy to let the rain touch my hair. The only other umbrella-less sistahs I saw were 2 locked beauties allowing the drops to hit there locs too. I felt soooo goood. Freedom

pookeylou : girl, you crazy. I didn't notice any permies with grocery bags⦠but you know I was looking!

jada1111: hmmm a hair steamer? I'll have to look into that oneâ¦.

    brwndot: glad I could help

HuGrad2002 & RaLuvsRed: yeah, the first time it happened to me was at my best friends wedding this past summer. It began to DRIZZLE/rain and the Negroes began to run like roaches. My fiancàƒ© (who was wearing braids) and I (wearing twists) just kept on posing for pictures for the photographer! We got a lot of beautiful and natural shots in the rain. The photographer loved us⦠everybody else thought we were crazy⦠especially the brides sister-- who ain't got but an inch of permed hair to begin withâ¦my boo and I just smiled, kissed, posed, and strolled back indoors. That was also a good day too!

jenniferb: oh my!!! Your story was funny!!! I like your icons at the end.!

That is a wonderful feeling. I didn't that just the other day, rain is never a stranger over here in New York. Instead of moving on to where I had to go, I just stood there in the rain for a while, it felt so good. No we can enjoy sunny and rainy days just the same and not be afraid to go out. That's the way it should be.

I lived in the Seattle area for almost 10 years. One thing you can count on is the rain, and my TWA and I were almost always out in it without a care in the world! I tell ya, with each rain droplet my hair became more and more beautiful! LOL

I too enjoyed the rain here in La and I have no fear when it makes its return. I did my grocery shopping this past weekend and on the shopping strip was a packed hair salon. I just know everyone in their was kicking themselves for getting their hair done in rainy weather. As usual I just strutted along with no worries in the world.
