  • Is It Just My Paranoia Or Are There Others?

Is it just my paranoia or are there others that are concern about the aroma that radiates from their hair?

Normally, I daily conditioning wash, staple products, headband, pick and go. My daughter braided my hair earlier during the week so my head had not been washed in couple of days.

Friday while at work a few fellow coworkers (permies & botched up weave jobs) were gathered around my desk talking. My thoughts while they were there were “Oh my God, I have not conditioning washed or rinsed my hair in a couple of days; I hope my hair does not smell.” Later during the day I said to my neighbor (permie), “Girl, I don’t know if I can take these braids. I need to put some water on my head.” She turns and looks at me crazy. Hmmm-OK next subject…

I rush home from work, jump in the shower bathe and rinse my hair. OH… what a relief! Afterwards, I sit on my daughter’s bed and lean over and ask her “Does my hair smell??” She was like NO; you are crazy!!

When I relaxed my hair I never once thought about what it my hair smelled like. I would just wash every two to three weeks, slap on some Moisture Max, curl and go.

Please tell me I am not crazy. Are their others who are concern about the aroma that radiates from their hair??

    Thanks!

See, I am evil. I would have said something like, "Yeah, perming and heat made my hair stink too." :-)

I know I get paranoid when I deal with my hair when it is wet. If I let it dry in a pony tail, I wonder if it is smelling sour inear my roots. I always check and it never does. I fell asleep once with wet hair under a turban and I thought it would be a sour mess. It smelled like whatever leave in conditoner I had on.

Honestly, I think we are still thinking about the way permed hair smells when you sweat or wet it. Horrible.

I think as nappies, we don't have that problem.

I never worry about if my hair smell. Believe me if your hair had an odor you'll be the first to notice. I think you're just use to doing the daily conditioning wash. Now that your'e not in your rountine you feel awakward.

I wear my hair very short, a cut close to the head twa, and I wash and shampoo it every day.

With hair as short and as clean as mine, I never have to worry about it smelling bad, in fact it smells good!
I believe in daily washing and shampooing to keep my hair fresh smelling and clean.

I believe when we wear our hair natural, there is much less of a chance of it smelling bad than when we process our hair.

I only wash my hair 2-3 a week, and have never thought or even occured to me that my hair might smell. I guess its because the products I use, smell so so good. and I clarify

I wash my hair when my hair tell me to. (twa) I don't feel like I need to do it constantly.

Yes NappCatcher, not following my daily routine made me feel a bit awkward. It was just a self-conscience thought that caught me off guard. Nothing that I am using on my hair now would cause it to have a foul odor. Actually my blend of shea butter and oils smells rather nice. People actually compliment me on the aroma.

    Thanks!

Gosh you're worried about not washing/rinseing in a couple of days. A lot of those permies havent washed their hair in WEEKS. Dont get me started on people who leave braides in for months w/o a washing.

With that out of the way, I used to worry about my hair when I pressed (it smelled so bad when water hit it), but I rarely worry, even when I get it wet. I rinse it mostly every day with a few exceptions and never had a problem with smell.

I can't say I've thought about a "bad" hair smell since going natural....

I have noticed a smell coming from my scalp if I don't wash my hair around every three days. My scalp is naturally quite oily, and I run and exercise every day, so there can be some funkiness if I don't stay on top of it. It's one of those smells that's kinda earthy and, well, "dirty scalp," when it's wet, and then switches to stale pre-puberty armpits when it's dry. Yes, I've sniffed it enough to pinpoint which armpits it mimics.

I've never worried about it...more of the products I use normally keep my hair smelling fresh until the next rinse or wash.

ITA!! Every since going natural, I never thougt of a bad smell coming from my hair either. To tell you the truth, I wash my hair more now then I ever did when I was a permie. When it was wash hair day for me, it took all day so I better not had no plans for that day. Blowing drying, Bumping, wraping, and all that rest of that mess that went along with being a permie. Now my hair smells like peppermint everyday!!

Ugh, nothing is more nauseating than the smell of frying hair, lol! When I blow dried and curled my hair as a permie, my dh would always wrinkle up his nose and say that the room smelled and it did! I hated to do my hair as a permie because my hair doesn't like to dry and it doesn't like to hold a curl either. I'm so glad I don't have to fight with it anymore.

fftopic Come to think of it, I need to give away these curling irons....

Recently, I made a concoction based of of shulta's curly pudding recipe and my dh loves the sweet orange smell! I used it on my daughter's hair and he commented on how good she smelled, too.

I haven't worried about it as a natural. In fact, I often get compliments on the smell of my hair. I don't wear a lot of perfume or smelly lotions because of my allergies. I've had several people tell me I smell good and ask what am I wearing. It just had to be the hair, b/c I didn't have anything else on besides deoderant and my soap is fragrance free as are my lotions.
