  • Is It Harmful To Re-twist The Hair Everyday?

I was thinking about co-washing everyday, then re-twisting it. Is it harmful to the hair to re-twist it everyday? Will it eventually lead to breakage?

    ...

I have started co-washing every other day, but I either twist or braid my hair every single night of the week. So the opposite is true in my case. If I did not braid or twist up my hair (keep it stretched), I would end up with a tangled mess in the morning. My hair is growing just fine. I am not experiencing any unusual breakage - just the norm.

In a previous thread, I said I didn't think it was harming my hair, but as a thin, fine haired nappy, I did start to notice breakage in the areas where I was twisting it up the same way every night. I had to cut it down, just wash and go and save my twistouts for occasional rockage. Of course all us nappies are different, but that's been my experience......

I am fortunate in that my hair texture allows for me to wash it while it's still in twists without much unravelling. It holds up pretty well, and if I need to redo a couple of twists, oh well.

Try it and see if it works for you.

I've recently started back co-washing nightly and twisting my hair during the work week, and in the mornings before I leave for work I untwist my hair for a twist out. There's another thread around here that poses the same question, and there are a lot of nappies that retwist every night.

I would think it mostly depends on the texture and how thick or thin the hair is.

Too much twisting may be harmful if you're careless. I think it depends on the amount of care that you take when you detangle, etc. It's about common sense, as far as I'm concerned.

In the end, I believe the less you manipulate your hair, the better. A generalization on my part, but it depends on you and how you care for your hair.

I don't know how long your hair is but as the grows longer the ends become more fragile and too much washing or manipulation will eventually damage them. Every now and then we should let the natural oils accumalate meaning go a few days without washing, it will not hurt.

I retwist nightly, even if in big fat twists or braids. I also wash it twice a week, typically Sunday and Wednesday, but in the spirit of nappy freedom, I wash it whenever I feel like it's asking to be washed.. lol. As a general matter, I've had less tangles recently and it's very healthy overall. I also think that how you handle it and what products you use also make a difference.

I think Anakonxx has a good point here that I haven't even thought about. On to your question though, I twist my hair up almost every night and I haven't seen any damage. I just think you need to be careful and perhaps make sure your hair is wrapped up or wear a satin bonnet.

I wash once every week and a half and twist every night religiously. I use shealoe butter when I twist to keep my hair moisturized. I think its important to trim your hair every couple of months if you plan on twisting daily.
