  • India's Hair On The Grammy's

I thought that India looked amazing last night. I guess I'm biased, I love big a** wild hair. As for it not being neat, I personally think that's what makes it look modern and fresh. I love afros and the perfect orbs my mom and aunts used to rock, it looked good on them in '78. Now I think Afros look best when they are all over the place with a lot of texture (bends and angles from different size plaits).

I love this look. (It's going to take me a couple years to get there and I can't wait)

I thought she was beautiful. Her hair was nappy or kinky extentions. I saw the braids myself, but regardless she even rocks nappy weave so that alone is great with me. She is a talented and authentic sista true to herself.

I love it!! I didn't watch last night, but the picture is inspiration. I haven't worn mine out like that yet, but I think I will soon. Wearing our hair in its natural state is not usually "mainstream" or "appropriate" for any occasion...let some people tell it. I don't think there was a need to make it neater or more glamorous for the Grammys because that is what she's all about...her ability to be herself. Point well portrayed.

Didn't watch the show, but I thought her hair looked wonderful in the first photo. I'm not the biggest fan of her music but her style is always hot to me and she's absolutely beautiful. I love her for that. I feel no "nappy gulit or responsibilty" either. lol.

Here's another pic. Hmm, not so great to me here, kinda has a funny slant to it, but still ok looking in my book. Looks like my braidouts after they start to get old. I kinda see the braids at the root here too.

ETA: Just saw this pic and I'm going to change my vote to definate "no thanks" and still no "nappy guilt".

That one side is just too "fly away" for me.
But if I hold my finger over the tip of that one piece at the top, I like it again. lol.

When my hair was loose, I wore my hair just like this in corporate America all the time. I never had any problems and don't really see why the hairstyle isn't "corporate". I guess this is why people always assume that nappies who wear there hair loose are poets, musicians, singers, or artists; even our fellow 'nappies' label our hair 'corporate' or 'not corporate'..

I like it too! Makes me want to run into the bathroom right quick and give myself a side part. India is beautiful and she pulls off the wild hair.

I thought India's hair was GORGEOUS last night. Instead of nappy guilt I felt some pride that she was rockin' the blow out on the red carpet.

I've had a lot of permies comment that my hair "looks wild" ... but then again, it is what it is. Not everyone can have a perfectly round coily fro 100% of the time. Sometimes you just have to go with the 'fro!

    (at least in IMHO)

    Looks fine to me too.

I don't know about India.Arie's hair last night. In any other occasion, like her getting interviewed on TV or as someone here said if this was the MTV or American Music awards then I'd dig it but not here. I totally loved her at the 2006 Grammys though. fftop: As for Beyoncàƒƒà‚©'s wig, I thought it looked too fake, too plastic. I used to use her as an example on how to do a weave right (I don't have an objection to them) but since so many sister's are rocking them, I find that her's have been lacking lately. I'd still pay good money (if it'd go to a charity of course) to see her natural hair...

Didn't like her overall look though..

I wear my hair big all the times.. LOVE IT!!!

I saw her hair from the side when her name was called for nomination and I didn't like it. But looking at her hair from the front, I think it was beautiful. I don't think it was her real hair because you could see the root of her hair was braided. I didn't see Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson, but its usually the same black women who get attention positive comments from entertainment shows like ET. For the most part, Hollywood is false/fake anyways.

I'm an India fan big time, and I loved the dress, loved the make up ...but not feeling the hair at all. And I loves me some big hair but something about this looked a bit off to me. Still can't put my finger on what though, but its better than the drawn on curl thing from BET Awards - I was mad as hell at her for that mess. And re: Beyonce' I must say I rather liked how she looked last night, she looked her usually perfectly fake self - if one is into that sort of plasticy looking, black stepford wife, black barbie look!

I wonder sometimes if we are truly ready for wide spread acceptance of nappy hair. Because then we would be held to a standard of being appropriate... meaning we would then be called out not just because nappy is always wrong... but because we look a hot mess.

    Which will happen.

Because like I said I wear my hair like this... donàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢t have a problem with the hair... the make-up and the dress that is another subject.

What bothers me is that I think that sometimes in an effort to prove that we are down for the nappy we forget where we are going.

I canàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢t imagine ANYBODY looking good with a wash and go at a formal event... when you look at the other pictures from the event she looks unkempt.

In another setting the hair would look fierce... but she should have pulled it together for the Grammyàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢s.

A good example would be Shakira yàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢all know she can do some bedhead when she is touring... but for the Grammyàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢s she was wild big hair but polished.

And I have seen India do it right but sorry this wasnàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢t one of those times for me.

And for those who say that they love wild big hair, I do too... but its like my moma used to say...

Itàƒ¢â‚¬â„¢s not WHAT you do... but WHEN and HOW you do it. ~W

I loved India's hair and honestly my hair was very similar to this at our last nashville gathering. Some people cannot ever get a perfectly shaped fro. I am one of them. I just like to let my hair do what likes to do.

    I loooovee it !!!

I have never seen natural hair that is loose that I didn't like. You just can't go wrong with styles like these. Perfection is not the key, begin who you are IS.

I was going to let this go but come on... you have a cute, polished, messy, braid out in your avatar... that was all I am saying she need was a bit of polish.

I don't know why we get so opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to our hair...

Serious question when did going nappy become synonymous with constant bedhead or when did bedhead at formals become cool.

No offense but that is what your hair does when it is polished you aren't rolling out the bed and out the shower with your hair coming out like it is in your avatar without some small attention.

If India was my girl I wouldn't let her roll down the red carpet looking like that... I wouldn't

Or more directly... I am curious...

All the nappies who love India's hair would this be YOUR style of choice going to the Grammy's or a FORMAL event ?~W

    me too.

her (real) hair looks much greater than most of the fake hair you sometimes see on the red carpets... i mean, beyoncàƒƒà‚© and her lace front that you can actually see (when it's supposed to be a discreet, subtle wig that looks everything BUT fake..............) or those other (white) actresses with their hair extensions... i mean, come on... this IS what black people's hair look like, people !!! and it's 'bout damn time that people KNOW about THAT !

if we keep hiding our hair or feeling ashamed of it (even on other people's heads) the days when we will be "allowed" to wear our natural hair proudly is far, very far ahead....

i LOVE the hair!! dang yall!! i LOVE doing my hair that way (i use bobby pins to keep the bangs down and mine is more of a textured fro looking thing-- product of a chunky twist out for me) :/

i like the highlights that she has in it too

eta: my avatar is a baby shrunken version of hers!! lol. also after reading through some posts (ie. watercolorz), i must admit that i wouldnt wear what she wore or have my hair that way for the grammys!! i dont think its appropriate. a nice updo or something elegant and formal looking + some noncotton looking clothes would be great.

hell, i would have some sort of updo and a GOWN. that looks fine for mtv music awards or billboard or something but NOT the grammys. what was she and her stylist thinking?!

watercolorz is right with one thing though-- what is deemed appropriate for nappy hair esp. if no one wears it enough?? ive only seen whites with the tossed big hair at more casual events (ie. mtv stuff)... i think the same should apply to nappy hair. stage appearance is different though (do what you want there!! lol)

I'll be honest, I really really liked her hair overall but not sure how I feel about the big fly away.

And i thought her attire was a little casual for the grammys.

But everything else, was A OK!!!

The same comments you were making about India's hair are the same comments the "white media" were making about Shakira's hair this morning (so I know they dogged India out since her naps weren't as polish as Shakira's). They dogged her out about her "wild hair" and that it wasn't appropriate for the Grammys. I'm proud of India and Shakira doing them.

I miss the old Grammys were everybody weren't doing the formal dresses and tux. It used to be about the artist dressing in clothes that represented their style. Now everybody's wearing designer duds and they come off as fake.

I just want to make clear that not feeling India's hair has nothing to do with being "ashamed of being nappy" or hampering the nappy movement. It's just a matter of taste.. IMHO India had a bed head. We all have our differences and thats what makes this forum unique.. however, despite our differences, we all have our love for naps in common.

A lot of people aren't getting what you are saying but I feel you. It's a cool hairstyle but its not for a formal event and I don't think the majority of the people on this board would wear that to a formal event. Sometimes nappies are just wrong. We need to learn to see this. Our hair looks good the majority of the time but sometimes we are just off some days. Yesterday was India's day.

I would wear a wash n'go to a formal event. I think this style can be formal especially with a hair accessories. India's hair does not look like bedhead or unkept. It looks like a nice freeform style.

As for the Grammy's requiring formal attire along the lines of Oscar wear. That's a new one on me. These are musical artists, they usually have a little more freedom when it comes to dressing.

I thought so too! I don't think I've ever felt 'nappy guilt.' As much as natural hair is finding it's way to the mainstream (have you taken note of how many commercials feature nappy/natural women--and men?), it's really about each of us doing our own natural thing and not looking back to see what or who might be gaining on you with a flaming tool of torture.

It's funny, because the other day, I was watching Oprah with my cousin (also natural). It was the episode on The Secret, and a 'Secret' teacher, Lisa Nichols was one of the panelist. She was wearing what I thought was a lovely, full kinda twist-out fro and I thought it looked fantastic so I commented as such. My cousin looked closely at the woman and the style and then promptly commented succinctly on what was being discussed on the show. Then flatly said "I don't like her hair." I didn't respond becaue I didn't want to get into a thing or defend why I liked it. I realized that she and I do view our happiness in our nappiness in very different ways and that was fine. I just think that she looks at 'wild' natural hairstyles more like something she wouldn't or couldn't wear comfortably and so tends not to like them.

Like another poster said--just go with the fro and do what feels good to you!

As for the Grammy's requiring formal attire along the lines...

i would wear a wash and go to a formal even too. its elegant to me...

but i would wear a gown for sure. i doubt anyone here would wear something casual to an honors banquet or something, right? ive always been either in a suit or a nice dress... nothing cottony-looking

ive always assumed that you were supposed to dress up to things like that... esp something of that importance... those are the highest honors in music and tv... you better bet ill dress up like a queen!
