  • I'm About To Smack Someone...supervisor Nitpicking

I'm fed up with my job. The first problem is that when I was hired in Dec 2005 I was supposed to be a Community Events Coordinator. I did that up until Feb/Mar 2006 when they hired another Community Events Coordinator. At first I thought the department needed 2 until I realized those responsibilites were taken away from me with no explanation whatsoever. Without those duties I have a BS clerical job that I would NOT have taken on it's own because it looks like I went a step back on my resume. I didn't even recieve an explanation for this change until July. An explanation that seemed to be BS to me. <_< Especially since it came way after the change was made. I'm sure my title will change when the do reviews for raises in Febuary. Oh, and I'm not eligable for a raise until March 2007 and was hired in Dec 2005.

Problem number 2 is my supervisor. She is a busybody control freak. She doesn't want me talking to anyone else in the department. She considers it socializing but can't reference any work not getiing done. Yes, I do talk to others in the department not in my immediate zone but I make sure to keep it around 5 minutes which is less than a smoke break that some take. I went to high school and middle school with one of the people in my dpet for goodness sakes. Oh and she's a liar. There was some retunred mail paperwork at my desk. I had a few days off and it had been back up cause of course no one did it while I was out so I'm catching it up. She tells me that the reps have told her they are not getting their returned mail and that she noticed I had not done it. First off the work was locked in my desk. The desk that I KNOW someone was in this morning because things were not the same. Let's just say that is not the first time that I know she has lied. Also, today she says that she is changing my schedule because she does not think I'm productive in my last 30 min. I don't know about any of you, but everyone I have polled says they are not as gung ho and productive during the last 15 min of their day as the first 15. And I do work during the last minutes of my shift, it's just not in great abundance. I'm ready to go the f*ck home. Meanwhile, there are people in my dept doing their schoolworkand everything else under the sun on company time and I get singled out.

I have to stay in my dept for 12 months beofre applying to another. My 12 months ends Dec 12 but I don't think I'll make it. I want to pop her. I have been sending out my resume in case I can't take it. I had an interview with a University last week. I could tel they really liked me but they went someone that was a closer match for their needs. However, I recieved a call today from someone at the University about a position that I did not apply for. Seems as the person I interviewed with last week forwarded my resume on. Sounds like a good sign to me that they did that! Working for the Univ system may have tuition benefits for my kids so I'm really crossing my fingers on this. In case it doesn't work out any advice on dealing with my supervisor until I can get the h$ll away from her?

I don't know what to tell you, but I sympathize. I actually had a supervisor move her entire office just so she could see into mine and see what I was doing every day. There are jerks everywhere you work.

The best way to deal with your supervisor is not to give her any reason to speak to you. You could document what you do daily, in a running journal in Outlook, so she doesn't have anything to say. Only talk at break time, or take a "smoke break" since she's complaining about 5 minutes when it could really be 15. Try to find a way to get her supervisor on your side, and the people who do the hiring in HR. Whatever dept you want to get into, find out who makes the hiring decisions there and get THEM on your side.

Oh, and follow up on that new job Do whatever is necessary to stay on top of that. It could be the opportunity you are looking for.

I have a friend of mine who was in a similar situation as yours, only she got "demoted" from Sr. Executive Assistant to Customer Service. They called it a "lateral" move, but is was really that the boss wanted his girlfriend in her position. She went from having only one boss to having like 5. The thing is, they thought she would get so pissed off that she would quit. Well, she didn't, and kept her salary too, even though customer service was an hourly position!! She eventually found something else. All that is to say, they could be setting your up to force you to leave. Don't let them; leave on your own terms.

I feel so bad for you. But sistah please do not resort to violence. I just suggest that you stay cool and take the blows until you can leave and find another job. I assure you that thise will not be the last bastard that you work for in your life.

that sucks all the way around. maybe you can schedule a meeting with her and possibly someone from HR and ask her what can you do to improve your work performance. after she gives you a list, then work on those things. this meeting is just for appearances because i am sure that you do your job fine. sometimes you just have to play the game. i am still learning this. good luck for the Univ. job. it sounds like things might be going great for you in that direction. keep us updated

p.s. take deep breaths, my sista

Thanks for the sugesstions everyone. I've been keeping a very low profile. ^^The violence was very figurative. LOL. I don't do jail. I have since been on the interview. I think that it went very well. I also have scheduled a meeting wiht my supervisor's boss to discuss these issues in the event I don't get offered the other position.

I'm so emotional, that when it goes down with anyone at my job, I just want to quit and never come back. I'll shed tears if my ego is really bruised. I couldn't take the constant nitpicking, I'd do like you and start a job search real heavy.

Grit your teeth until you fnd something else. Ordinarily, I wouldn't say look for something else, but the fact that they essentially demoted you, and didn't have the decency to give you warning, or pretend to try and train you, so as you know you'll be getting it back at some point, I'd say, your not doing what you signed up for, and why should you do smething you never wanted to do in the first place?

Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea for her to create a journal in Outlook, only because nowadays, companies have installed software where they can log every keystroke and see what sites you go to. If I were in her position, I would get a flash drive or a floppy desk and keep the journal in there.

Macgirl, if you have a computer at home, save your journal on it, just in case your floppy becomes 'corrupted'. I think a flash drive would work best for you to save your journal on. I don't know your money situation but perhaps you can buy one of these flash drives, perhaps 1GB. I think you can get them for around $40. Hope that helps and I hope everything works out for you.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I was gritting...

I hear ya. My husband has plenty of flash drives laying about. Actually my co-worker handwrites when people are doing their schoolwork or are late etc on his calender. He jokes so people think he's joking but he is dead serious. He let's them know when he does it so they can see him. He obivously has worked with these people longer than I have. <_<
