  • How long would you grow your locs? :-\\

I plan to let my locs grow until they can't anymore. I really would like to see how long they'll get before I start to cut. Once I've had the length for a while ill probably cut them to mid back length.

I don't think I want them past my shoulders to...

I agree! I don't want extremely long locs, either. I want them a little longer than my shoulder. Then I will keep them clean, colored and trimmed. I am really too low maintenance to hair that I may sit on one day.

While I said originally that I couldn't see myself cutting them ever, I'm thinking that maybe in the future, if they get long (like long-long) and I've had my fill of the length, I might pull most of them back into a ponytail and cut them into a layered look, and keep the ones up front long. I think that would look cute.

I just cut my hip length locs into a bob so I'll let them grow long again for another decade and cut them in 2020. I seems like my neck starts bothering me around the 10 year mark.

    Thank you kindly

I kinda pile them up in a high ponytail/bun. They get out though, by the time i wake up lol. It only bothers me when they wrap around my neck

Thank you ma'am! Yes, i did not start my locks freeform (just twisted), but i began freeforming them around their 7th year. My next set will be freeform from the beginning, cause i would LOVE to have mine as thick as yours are (they look so velvetty and lucious!).

Every one locks have not succumb to Mrs. Mandela's plight. I have seen men with locks that are thick as ropes and they are not having scalp issues. Each person is different. Some take care of their locks better than others. And you have to consider the genetic factor as well. I have been locked for 5 1/2 years and they are starting to touch the top of my rear. They do not feel heavy and I am not experiencing scalp issues. I think it pointless to take someone's experience and assume it will be your fate. I do not know how long I will let them grow, however if they become cumbersome then I shall cut them, right now they are doing fine. :-)

I give you ladies credit to handle all that hair.
I couldn't go past mid back length. I think preferably upper back length, all I really want is an awesome ponytail n I'm gooooood

    They are BEAUTIFUL!!!!
I'm at my 8th year and mine are at my butt. Looking at yours makes me wonder what length mine will be when I hit the 11th year mark.

And since they are freeform you should post these pics in the freeform thread too.

Insegnante, reading your post made me think about when I hear other people talk about "terminal" length which is when your hair reaches it's longest length. I wonder if this is true?

    I don't know...

Terminal length only applies to loose hair because it doesn't grow indefinitely. All hair falls out at some point. Locs don't have that issue because the new hair locs with the old so when it does shed (hence the white bulbs we sometimes see on your locs) it doesn't just fall off. So as long as your hair grows and keeps locking, you locs will just keep growing longer.

I am notorious for having short hair...so much so that my locs are the longest I think my hair has ever been! My goal when I started my loc journey was to able to recreate the styles I loved when I had kinky twist extensions, and that was just past shoulder length. I figure that I will try to get to mid-back at MOST and I may just stop at APL for my sanity lol, then I plan to rock a fly-a$$ loc bob. But since I am so far from ANY of those dreams I may change my mind by the time I get there

I will definitely grow them past my waist, anything longer I would have to cut down. It already takes all day for them to dry...
