  • How Do You Feel About Black Women With Blonde Hair?

I just wanted to know because I was lurking some other non-hair board, and someone mentioned that black women don't look good with blonde hair. I see people on here with blonde hair and I think it looks beautiful. Personally, I think, if you choose the right color for your skin tone, it looks fine. But I do, however, have a problem with really really dark women with platinum blonde, straight hair(Something I see in Dallas alot), not that it's on a dark skinned woman, it's just that it looks so unnatural. Are they trying to fool people into thinking they look like that naturally? idk. I saw the pick of Serena Williams and also looking at how Eve looks now, honestly, I don't think it looks right, it's kind of like an anomaly. I've seen naturally blonde black people, but alot of times it goes with their skin tone.

Basically, i just want to get your opinions, do you think it's just a fashion statement most of the time or do you think there are black women out there actually trying to pass as being white?

i feel if you want it, do it! just because people say it looks bad doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. personally though i don't like seeing it because to me the types of blondes i've seen on black women just look off!

I go back and forth on this one. As you said, a lot of the time it just doesn't look 'natural.' But then on a very few black women it looks pretty good. But honestly, I do wonder why we (as black women) do it. Is it just for style purposes or is it the reason a lot of white people do it...because blonde is glorified and seen by many people and mainstream society as the most desirable and beautiful. To each her own, but I'd never do it, as I currently I see it as having some of the same 'issues' that often come with us perming our hair. Just a lot of unknowns about why the person is choosing to have their hair that way.

It can be both. Some do it for fashion and some do it to wash out their blackness.

I personally don't like blonde hair on most black women. It doesn't go well with our skin tones and features.

ETA: I'm not a fan on blonde hair period, not even on white people. But, it definitely looks better on them than black people.

To me blonde hair (or just light hair in general) equals fierce in my mind because it's the total opposite and extreme of my hair color. I like the contrast between the light and the dark. I would never dye my whole head blonde but I do tend to wear light auburn (#30 one step down from #27 which is blonde) mixed in my weaves from time to time because I like the color on me. As long as you get a shade that compliments your complexion I don't see the problem with it. That goes for blonde, black, red, orange, etc. When black people do it I think it's just a matter of trying something new. I don't think it means wanting to be white. Somebody would have to be a little off if they truly believed adding some blonde dye made them white or closer to white.

My grandmother's hair was blonde for years but it looked good on her. Also another older lady I know who works in the supermarket and has known me since I was a baby has blonde hair. When I saw her the other day she had a blonde wig on but her own hair is blonde too and it looks great on her. I've never known her to have another color hair in my lifetime. If you can make it work for you, I'd say go for it.

I don't much care for it..especially if it is blond and straight...Eve is a pretty woman, but the blond hair takes away from her beauty, imo...same with Serena...I had blondish streaks once, and I looked washed out...I think part of it is the undertones in darker skin; we have gold and reddish undertones that look better with darker hair...

    I just saw this article:

The number of blonds attending Howard is starting to increase according to some students, but they do not mean that White enrollment at the University has gone up.

Instead, they believe the number of Black girls opting for blond hair is rising and can be seen in Black women who dye or highlight their hair blond.

While some students think the added color is an attempt to keep up with the latest trends, others claim it is an effort to appear more Eurocentric.

"I feel some do it because they need a change," said senior physical education major Stephen Robinson. "They feel the more extreme the better, and blond, for some, is extreme."

Sophomore criminal justice and Spanish double major Leigh Anderson thinks Black women dye their hair to meet the European standards of beauty.

"Everybody always says it is to make it more manageable and stuff, but at that time white women were the pinnacle of beauty," Robinson said. "After being slaves, I doubt that straightening our hair and making it easier to manage was top priority, it was all about survival and looking like the people that were surviving at that time."

Junior film production major Yasmen Howell admits to dying her hair blond and suggests that Black females choose their hair color by seeing which hair color is most prominent in music videos.

"I dye my hair once a year," Howell said. "I think it is a trend. I have died my hair every color that has been hot. It was red before and it was black last year."

However, other students who have dyed or highlighted their hair blond say they did it for reasons excluding the desire to be trendy or look Eurocentric. Some Howard students with naturally dark hair decide to dye their hair blond to brighten it up.

"My hair is really, really dark and I wanted to do something different," said Nina Harrison, sophomore undecided major. "If people do it to look more Eurocentric it is a subconscious thing because we are trained to conform to the white idea of beauty. People do no think 'I want to appear more Eurocentric.' There are not a lot of options that look natural for black girls."

Harrison suggests that Black girls who go blond to keep up with the latest look model their hair after singer and actress Beyoncàƒƒà‚©. Howard University males, on the other hand, feel that females are looking for attention by coloring their hair.

Shaun Carter, a junior economics major, prefers the natural look over the latest trends.

"They might not know they are looking for attention but they are," Carter said. "It looks good on a few but it does not look better than the normal hair color. I heard it damages your hair anyway so you should not do it."

Sophomore business major Stephane Assoumou said whether or not blond hair is attractive on Black females depends on the woman's features.

"Not everybody can pull it off," Assoumou said. "It depends on certain physical characteristics."

That's totally hilarious. I've had the same aversion to blonde hair myself, even on white people. I just don't find it particularly good looking on 95% of people period. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I definitely prefer darker hair and skin on people. Ever wonder if humans bred themselves into being blonde, kinda like we mess around with plants and animals

Edited to say: Aw thanks Shaun whoever ya are!

I think most Black women who wear straight blond hair look ridiculous. Most of the ones who looked okay to me usually had a honey blond or strawberry blond, not that full-on platinum blond Barbie hair.

I have to admit though that I think platinum and blondes do look good on some natural women with short hair.

I don't think most of these women are trying to 'pass'. I think it has to do with years of conditioning that anything European is desirable and they choose the blond hair not really realizing the underlying reason for their 'preference'. But some folks just wear blond hair because they like it. You just never know a person's true reason....

I think it depends on what looks good with your skin tone as well.
At the same time, I went to get highlights and the stylist tired to convince me to go with red tones and not light brown tones because of my skin tone. She placed a track in my head that was the color she wanted to use and realized just because I was dark didn't mean red was the best fit. IT WASN'T.
She went with the light brown and it looked good. But I wasn't about to put any hardcore blonde up in my head.........

I've noticed that alloooot of people, regardless of race, say they preferr darker features, then why is it that women of color(black, asian, etc.) still try to dye their hair blonde and get fake blue eyes. I guess that beauty standard only goes for men.

In some cases..yea...maybe its to make them feel as if they are "closer to white"...but in more cases I think its for a change of style..I mean..I know we've all seen the white girl who dyes her hair jet black..but not many people will say that she's trying to be something other than her race.

I can attest to that. At my college you can walk into any classroom, and you are guaranteed to see at least one black women with blonde hair or blonde highlights.

I must wonder how healthy it is to be dying the hair blonde esp. if the natural haircolor is black and you're not using henna. Then again it's not my hair...

True. They just accuse them of being emo. or gothic. I have heard white people with natural black hair say they get accused of being gothic just because of their black hair.

I'm guessing it's because that's the white standard of beauty. But if you ever notice something, white people these days LOVE to be tan and tan so much they start to look 'unnatural.' So actually most of them do seem to prefer darker skin....they just don't want you to be BLACK (as in negro) with darker skin. Somehow that just aint so pretty <_< That is kinda funny though that saying "tall, dark, and handsome" when referring to men ....

I had a teacher back in the 6th grade, she was white, she wasn't like pasty pale or anything, she was lightly tanned. We were talking about something, i forget. There me and another black girl (dark skinned) was in the class. She mentioned something about how she would like to have my color, 'not too dark, but yours would be just right." At the time, I didn't think much of it, but now, that sounded kind of messed up. She told that to me.

depends on who is wearing it, and how they wear it. i love to see short blonde cuts natural or re.laxed. and when they know how to wear it - it can be fierce, but then there are the ones who are just blonde, and it is just there, it doesnt look good if you dont work it, same with being natural, if you dont work it, it doesnt look good, same with re.laxers if you dont work it...it is just blah. a str8 back ponytail is not sexy whether its blonde, re.laxed. or nappy...it has to be dressed up
the prettiest person can look awful wearing blonde, if they dont wear it right

I also don't like blond on most people for the reasons mentioned above. It can look alright on SOME people but we all know a lot of blonds that don't need to be blond.

While we're on the subject of colors, everyone notice how light eyes are considered pretty? I know it's "different" or what not but it seems like things relating to the fairer side of the spectrum get more admiration.

I think violet eyes are the most unusual and beautiful out of the bunch... as far as light eyes go. it's very rare to find someone with violet eyes.

As far as the other colors go, well, I really don't care.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of this either, but I don't really like how dyed platinum blonde hair looks on most people, regardless of their skin colour. My personal taste is for the more natural side of things.

Exactly! She didn't want to be you (the negro part anyway) but she'd sure like to be darker....just not too dark now

Why am I disappointed when I see Asian women with blond hair? My Indian friend added blond streaks to her beautiful dark brown/black hair and it looked weird to me.

But by and large, I don't like blond hair on...

I do too. The color that she has now. I love it. Some of the other blondes and browns she's had in her hair weren't working. The blonde she had when she first came out and had the short twa was too light. Sometimes I watch her show in reruns on Tv one and they change her style and color up a lot on there. Some of the styles and colors just don't work for me. I prefer her with blonde hair. She said in an interview a few years back that her hair was blonde for like 10 years before she even became a rapper. And looking back now she hates that pink/purple hair she had for a minute. I guess the blonde works for her.

i think as long as people pick the right blonde, it looks fine. but far too many people walk around with hair colors that look insane on them.

and when i was relaxed, i had blonde highlights...some very very blonde. :P

I've never understood white people's obsession with blondes. I think they looks so much better with a brunette or red hair color. Blonde tends to wash people's complexions out to me.

Did you mean black people who want to be darker but just not too dark? Or those who just want to be darker in general no matter how dark they get.

On with the topic at hand, I have seen Mary J look decent with blonde hair, but I still think she looks 10 x better with black or brown.
