  • Have You Ever Been Burned?

I just added a survey to the web site so that I can get a jump on some research on the extent of the damage caused by perms.

The survey is very primitive. Only a few questions. But I wanted to get some idea of the usage and experience women have had when they used a relazer/texturizer on their hair.

If you get a minute...it would help me out if you would visit the site and take the brief survey.

Thanks in advance to any who can help in this way.

But it will be worth it...I can feel it.

It's good to see that LOCC is coming along nicely. I will forward the survey along to some of my permie friends. Maybe this will be apt to get them thinking about perm damage and finally do something about it, especially as the organization grows. Hats off to you, Pookeylou!

    Thanks again ya'll...

I posted the survey on another site that have majority permed members. I am hoping that they take the survey. I explained that the survey is not posted to judge or condem...but to get an idea of the scope of the experiences and to see what the view is of highly textured hair in general.

I will let ya'll know how the results turn out.

    Thanks so much to all.

I'm glad you took the survey Masoesa.

If you have ever permed in your life then this survey is for you.

I would also love to see the scope of how many women have NEVER worn a texturizer or a relaxer. I am sure the number is very small.

Right now I can see the results behind the scenes, (this is so cool! :-) ) and so far over 90% of the women responding ....have been burned at one time or another.

I am not shocked by that...but my thought is this...

If someone came up to me and and put a lit cigarette out on my arm...there would be no question that they would not be able to do it to me again...without someone hitting the ground...HARD!!!!

Yet...many of us have deliberately applied a chemical to our heads that has caused a burn, to a greater or lesser degree than that of a cigarette burn. Many of us CONTINUE to do this to ourselves and are burned each time.

    Why?!?!?!??!?!?

I know WHY...but the logic behind it saddens me...it really does.

None of us would THINK of putting out a cigarette on a childs head...but many of us as children have had a relaxer applied with the result of a similar burn. Many, unwittingly, have applied a relaxer to our children...unintentionally burning them. Telling them, that the burning sensation, scabs, thin hair..."is all part of the process" to be beautiful.

Maybe I am viewing this as too severe...it just makes me sad when I think about all we who have at one time or another permed our hair, been through.

*nods* Yes. I can either scan the copies and send the files to you, or I can fill in the information on the online survey exactly as it is on the printed, completed copies. Or any other way that I don't know about. Whichever way is easiest for you.

ITA!! I'm not proud to admit it but, I was one of those parents who has done that, and said that to my daughters. Now I see the era of my ways, and that will never happen again. Thanks to this site and members like you Pookey!! I don't think you're viewing this too severe. It's a wake up call, and daggone it I'M WOKE!!

To make sure the research is authentic...

If you dont mind scanning them in and sending the files...whenever you get time. The survey will be there a while...it is part of the goal of the organizaiton to research the effects...so there is no hurry. I will retrieve them from webmaster loccorg.com and put the results in an excel spreadsheet and keep a seperate tally that way.

Can you add the current date that the survey was completed to each page?

This might be cumbersome process if quite a few ladies take it...but I will soon have a fax number set up and if it may be easier to fax these to me in the future if a number would like to take a printed form of the survey and send their results that way.

So far, the survey does not allow multiple entries from the same person, (that I can see). So I dont think it will allow you alone to enter the results from several different people.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

I am not surprised by the burn numbers. I was under the impression that it was a normal part of life when I was younger. In fact, that's how the stylist timed the process. She would ask "is it burning" and your perm was done when the answer to that question was "yes."

How sad. I never really gave it much thought until now.

To make sure the research is authentic...If you dont...

Awesome. I'll start making a list of people who would be interested, begin contacting them tomorrow, and get the dated results back to you once everyone has completed the surveys.

A bit off topic, but since you're here...if you need any help with your organization as far as writing, editing, researching or advertising is concerned, please feel free to pm me and let me know what, if anything, I can do to be of assistance.

Dang! I remember that "is it burning" phrase too!

jennifer...definitley could use some help. I will put you on the list for the online meeting in the middle of July. I will send you an email when I have the date and time set up.

    Thanks again.

    I took the survey,

One thing is I am not sure if some of the questions referred to someone who is relaxing currently or previously.
