  • Hair Dye--is It Straying Away From Natural?

I was just wondering if any of you guys consider hair coloring/dye a straying away from what being natural is all about. If not---which types of dyes are good for natural hair?
    If so, why?

it's straying from your natural hair colour, yes. Your natural hair colour? no, not unless the dye did some serious damage.

I got my hair highlighted at Aveda. The dye they used was like 97% natural

not i dont consider it that way because im natural not natural. taking a shower and wearing makeup isn't natural either but i do those to enhance my looks

i dye my hair 4-6 times a year. i like texture and tones because ive never had any issues with dryness from it andi always do a lighter color. ive had the worst expereinces with loreal feria but i hear they have changed the formula. ive never had any luck with semi perm or temp color because they always was right out of my hair after the initial rinsing.

This topic has been discussed to death on this board and can get very heated. People just aren't going to agree on it. The focus on this site is on hair texture

ETA: To answer your question about which dyes, I highly recommend the Aveda coloring system. It's 97% plant based

I dye my hair to cover the gray...that's not natural, and I don't have a problem with it. Like the other poster said, I'm natural, not natural.

BUT, I'm going to check out the Aveda products. I would like to use the most gentle color possible. Thanks ladies!

some permanent dyes can cause damage to your hair. i've experienced this before. i ended up cutting all the color off. so i won't mess with the stuff. may try a rinse or something in the future, but nothing permanent.

answering the question, it's not completely natural to use color, but color is not our issue and not the point of this site. It is our texture that we have had to come to embrace and appreciate. ^_^

So true. Your color will not be natural. Your texture will remain natural. Could you experience damage as a result of dying your naps? Possible but not necessarily a given.

    Good Luck!

Hey! This thread made me realize something!

If you color your hair, you are natural but not natural... you're embracing your hairs but not your natural hair color.

If you frequently use heat on your hair, you are natural but not natural... you're not using relaxers but you're not embracing your hairs all the time.

If you frequently wear weaves, extensions, and wigs, you are natural but not natural...you're not using relaxers but you're covering your napps with fake hair.

If that is true, you can almost say ladies with relaxed hair could be passed off as natural but not natural since they aren't embracing their napps.

The only way for someone to be all the way natural AND natural, they would have to use no chemicals, no color, no heat, no fake hair, no products, and not style their hair.
So I've came to the conclusion that hair is just hair and people need not to worry about who's really natural and who's really natural... no one's hair is better than anyone elses, so do what you want with your hair and take proper care of it! ^_^

is the issue the dye or the effects of some dye? I have seen some peoples albums where they have dyed their hair and you can actually see a difference in texture. I think this may be one of the reasons why this topic often gets so heated because it may change your texture and if it does then comes the big question...are you still natural?

I consider myself natural. My hair is dyed but my hair is in its natural state
I love Textures & Tones dye too I was wearing Ruby Rage for awhile and now I am wearing a color that I can't remember the name of. It's supposed to be red but it's more of an orange. My co-worker tried it too and it came out kind of orange on her too

I really don't think it is because no one dyes their hair with the intention of changing the texture ...I think I am going to bow out of this one cuz I really don't know....would the next thing be are you dying your hair to look like other people...i think most people just do it for a change but what do i know

    Misslys,

Did you have to go to an "Aveda" hair salon to dye your hair or the hair dye is available at local beauty supply stores and online? If it is available at local beauty supply stores and online, can you provide me with some info on where I can purchase the hair dye? If not I leave in NY, please find out if there is an "Aveda" hair salon where I can dye my hair...(I tried to look the info online last night, but I kept getting an error message) Thanks in advance...

Huh? Whatchootalkinbout Poohbear? If you have a chemical fire cream, your texture is not natural. But then, I know you know this so I really am having a hard time following your logic on this one.

LOL! Let me explain myself here...I know relaxed hair isn't natural, I was kinda rambling there, but since a lot of ladies here said that colored hair is natural but not natural, I was kinda comparing relaxed hair to colored hair in that relaxed ladies could say they are natural but not natural. For instance, I know some relaxed ladies who consider themselves natural because they don't use color or fake hair. That's what I was talking about, but in reality, they really aren't natural nor natural. Y'all feel me now?
