Stray Dog in Kenya Saves Abandoned Baby

    By RODRIQUE NGOWI

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A newborn baby abandoned in a Kenyan forest was saved by a stray dog who apparently carried her across a busy road and through a barbed wire fence to a shed where the infant was discovered nestled with a litter of puppies, witnesses said Monday.

The baby girl, named Angel'' by hospital workers, was clad in a tattered shirt and wrapped in a plastic bag when the dog found her Friday, according to Aggrey Mwalimu, owner of the shed where the baby was discovered in a poor neighborhood near the Ngong Forest in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

When the dog picked up the baby in a dirty bag, it came and dropped her behind the wooden building where the dog has its puppies,'' Mwalimu told The Associated Press Monday.

The 7-pound, 4-ounce infant was taken to a hospital and is doing well, responding to treatment. She is stable ... she is on antibiotics,'' said Hannah Gakuo, spokeswoman of the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The baby was found after two children reported hearing an infant's cries near their wood and corrugated metal shack.

I followed them outside and we started looking around the compound and a nearby plot,'' said Mary Adhiambo, the children's mother.

They eventually found the tan mixed-breed dog lying protectively with a puppy beside the mud-splattered baby wrapped in a torn black shirt, Adhiambo said. The short-haired dog with light brown eyes has no name, residents said.

Adhiambo told the Daily Nation newspaper that she used warm water to wash the baby, cleaning the umbilical cord with rubbing alcohol, then dressed her in fresh clothes and fed her as neighbors gathered at the shack on hearing news of the discovery.

Residents took the infant to a nearby police station before taking her to the Kenyatta National Hospital, officers at the station told the AP.

Doctors believe the baby had been abandoned about two days before the dog discovered her, said Gakuo, the hospital spokeswoman.

She cried a lot during admission, because her umbilical cord was infected,'' Gakuo said. She is now very quiet. She just feeds and sleeps. I was there this morning and she looked at me and yawned, looked at me again and yawned.''

Dozens of Kenyans have visited the baby, who has curly black hair, in the hospital after learning of her rescue, Gakuo said.

She is now fine. She is warm. She is in a separate room ... with a lady who is also nursing a baby admitted in hospital for treatment,'' Gakuo said. The lady is looking after her as if she is her own child.''

Infant abandonment is problem in Kenya, where poverty and the inability to care for the child are blamed. Most people who abandon babies are never caught.

Officials were not able to immediately provide figures on abandoned babies, but Gakuo said that each month, about two infants are brought to the main public hospital in the capital alone.

Abandoned babies are normally taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital because it is a public hospital,'' Gakuo said. People are now donating diapers and baby clothes for this one.

I thought this story was a sad one because it illustrates how a dog had more motherly instincts than the woman who abondoned the baby. _headshake:

I do hope that someone took that dog and her puppies in. Good doggie!

Poor little thing! I hope the baby didn't sustain any major injuries/brain damage after being dragged through the wire fence and across the highway.

And you know the child is absolutely beautiful. I saw her on the news. How someone could just leave a child for nature to have its way with it is beyond me.

    A hot damn shame. _headshake:
Is this what the world has been reduced to? Having stray dogs care for our babies. The dark cloud of the Apocalypse covers us all.

    An update...

Kenya Police Make Abandoned Baby Arrest

    By RODRIQUE NGOWI

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police arrested the suspected mother of an infant girl - dubbed Angel'' by hospital officials - who was abandoned in a Kenyan forest and reportedly rescued by a stray dog, officials said.

The young woman, who acknowledged she was pregnant but claimed she miscarried, was arrested Wednesday night following a tip, Lang'ata District Police Commander Joshua Omukata told The Associated Press.

The woman lives in the neighborhood where Angel was found and was seen pregnant days before the child was discovered in a group of dogs,'' Omukata said Thursday. She claims that she ... miscarried some two weeks ago.''

Doctors believe the infant was about two weeks old when she was found Friday.

Police said the woman would undergo a medical examination. We are in the middle of investigations. We don't have any other suspect at the moment,'' Omukata said.

A government spokesman and others have expressed some skepticism about the story of the dog's role in saving the child, saying it may be too good to be true. But many have been touched by reports of the rescue. The story continues to attract an outpouring of concern in Kenya as well as abroad.

Unwanted infants are often abandoned in Kenya, with poverty and failed relationships frequently to blame. Kenya's weak law enforcement and social security systems mean most people who forsake their babies are never caught.

At the Kenyatta National Hospital, where Angel is being treated for exposure and an infection in her umbilical cord, 16 abandoned children are currently being cared for.

The dog apparently found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag in the nearby Ngong Forest, said Mary Adhiambo and other neighbors who witnessed the baby's recovery in a litter of puppies.

The dog, now called Mkombozi'' or Savior,'' reportedly dragged the baby across a road and through some barbed wire to a compound in the poor Nairobi neighborhood where puppies from two stray dogs were sheltering.

I saw a dog carrying a baby wrapped in a dirty, black cloth as it crossed the road,'' witness Stephen Thoya was quoted by the independent Daily Nation newspaper as saying. I was shocked at first, and when I tried to get a closer look, the dog ran through the fence and disappeared along a dirt road.''

The infant was discovered after two children said they heard the sound of a baby crying near their wooden and corrugated-iron shack. Residents found the infant lying next to the dog and her own pup.

Well-wishers have inquired about adopting the child. Others want to adopt the dog. But Mary Adhiambo, who is caring for the stray, said she's not ready to give Savior up.
