  • "do Something With That Head"

    That was what my co-worker told me. I was at MY desk minding my OWN business, and she walks up to mean and says, you know I love you, you know you my friend, and I would say or do anything to hurt you right? I did not say a word. She then said, you need to do something with that head. That does not look right on you. You are not a Jamaican. What are you doing with your head anyway?

    First of all, she is NOT my friend; she is only a CO-WORKER. WE have never had lunch together, never hung out after work. So, her beginning speech was all BULLMALARKY! I was not offended at her comment because that is her own ignorant opinion, but I thought she lacked tact. If you are curious and want to ask questions then that is one thing, but she was so negative after starting off so loving Now, I had to take a breather before I responded, but I basically took her to school after telling her that I am a grown a** woman making grown a** choices, and if she does not like my choices, that is her problem. Further more, Jamaicans are not the only people who decide to lock- that comment really showed me how ignorant she was. This is coming from a woman who wears that same tired a** weave ponytail on a daily basis. There is no variety or anything. I just can't believe she came at me like that. Her comments were after many compliments I have received this week on my hair. She was like you mean to tell me your friends haven't told you your hair doesn't look right, and I said hell naw, they compliment me and applaud me on my decision. Why folks feel the need to tell you what you should and shouldn't do with the hair on top of your own head?!

    The nerve of some people...for her to think that her phonytail is superior to what naturally grows from your head is utterly ridiculous.

    *sniffs around*

    What's that I smell?

    *sniffs again*

    I smell HATERADE!

    As much as I hate that word, it's the only way to define it. Heaven forbid someone feels comfortable with their choice-I guess she is mad because you walk around with your head held high, and she walks around with Mr. Ed's tail hanging off her head. Shake that off girl.

    I get those same retarded type of comments about my hair at work. I was also told that my hair looks like snakes are crawling on my head and other ignorant comments. I am way too past them and those comments. I just laugh and shake my head.

    Still waiting for them to get on my level.............

    I think that having locs is a global expression of African culture. You do not have to be from the Caribbean to wear a style that is comfortable for lifestyle. I feel that your co-worker is a victim of miseducation and the slave mentality of many of our Brothers and Sisters. The most important thing beyond hair is health and having chemicals in your hair is not healthy. Be strong and healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Peace,

    Yeah, let's hear it for the Loc-Haters! <_<

    To All my Newbie Loc and "soon-to-Loc" Sisters! "Get used to the BS Comments!" {mostly from Haters}
    Now, keep in mind there are different types of "haters" one is the "Self" Hater {don't like their Afrikan hair Nor anyone who advocates/loves looking that way!}, and you have the "personal" hater, {this one can even be a "Napptural" --- yeah, this happend to me about a year ago, sista with the fro gonna say a "hater" comment about my Locs! }

    I understand what you mean, I'm a newbie locer I've had all kinds of comments my 2nd to the oldest said she hates my hair she prefers me with permed hair. I enjoy just being me I love my hair even on the days it itch's I know my hair is growing whenever it itch's. When I go to work folks really don't know how to take me seems I get other nationalities that compliment me on my hair but my own folks seem to attack me worse. Let me share this one with you I went to the Wal-Mart and it was pouring down rain the front entrance was packed with people waiting for the rain to let up I smiled to myself and said excuse me and walked out into the rain that felt so great to me in the that time and space I wasn't worried about getting wet and it felt great just being me. I just ignore folks with negative feed back and keep my head up. I don't understand all the negative feedback even when I ask a simple question about my hair that is something I don't understand I think folks need to understand you can FEEL a person's energy thru this screen just a little food for thought. When newbies ask questions just answer them without making them think they are stupid. My mother taught me that there is NEVER a stupid/silly question maybe someone overlooked something but needed help to get on track. Have a great evening

    OOOoohh girl I feel you 100%. I'm getting married next month and lots of people in my family are saying, "what are you going to do with your hair?" As if my hair isn't appropriate or formal the way it is! They want me to wear this silky curly wig. Granted, a few months ago I would have put it on no problem, but since I started growing my locs I've gone through my 2nd mental transition. I'm proud to rock my frizzy, spirited, strong locs. Why are other people so ignorant!!!!!

    I was just asked this tonight. Simply put, my hair is off limits to suggestions, comments, or examples if it is different from how I want it to look. I don't care who's making the comments. I will wear my twists (locs) until they fall off my head or combine to make a triangle!

    Ughh! The nerves of some people.
    I remember when I first started locing I had haters who made rude comments. Now they're telling me they love my locs.

    Please do not pay these people any mind.. Its like once you start locking everyone has an opinion on how you should/shouldn't wear your hair, trust me it will get annoying. But, like someone else mentioned the haters and negative comments keep my head up high, and they make me love my locks MORE!.

    Go get a fake ponytail and, just as she is looking at you from her desk, begin to dust with it and comment "How good 'dis' horsetail is for dusting!"

    I had to stop laughing at the replies before I could type!

    But seriously, though.....

    Ain't it a shame that letting our hair do what is does naturally needs an explanation or excuse, yet no one feels the need to explain their weave/rel*xer/etc.
