  • Did she reeeeally just say that! And that! And THAT!!

I ran into a old friend that I used to be suuuper tight with back in the day. But a few years ago I had to stop kicking it with her for my own sanity's sake. She was one of those friends who just wouldn't grow up and was doomed to be childish forever. So I had to move on.

Anyway we went through the whole "OMG!", (((HUGS))) "How are youuu!" routine. And after about 10 or 15 minutes of catch-up convo, hair came up.

HER: Sooo what, are you going natural or something??
    ME: Yeah, I am.
HER: Wooow! Well, I'm sure it'll look okay on you cause your pretty
    (That was strike was one)

*** a few more moments into the convo***

HER: I guess thats the cool thing about being a SAHM (Stay-at-home-mom) now. You don't have to leave the house as much so you don't HAVE to perm your hair.
    (That was strike two)

***At this point I'm looking for an escape hatch, some people aren't even worth cussing out (plus it's not my style)***

HER: So doesn't not perming your hair make your head hurt really bad... or do you just get used to it. I get headaches when I don't perm on time.
    (That was strike three)

I was done trying to gloss over her stupidity. So I suddenly realized the time (Hint, Hint, Nudge, Nudge). And made a run for it before she realized I "forgot" to give her my new number.

    *flatlines*

Oh gosh, I thought my relatives were the only ones with that 'if-I-don't-perm-my-hair-I-get-headaches' mess.

Do people actually take the time to LISTEN to themselves when they speak?

You handled that well. After comment 2 I would have told her about herself.

this is totally OT but my head used to hurt pretty bad when it was time to get a relaxer, too. i used to wonder why more natural women weren't in constant pain.

even now i still don't understand where the discomfort was coming from. i'm just glad that it's gone.

It was probably your scalp remembering the burn from last time and dreading the next

My scalp used to experience some discomfort right before I was scheduled for a relaxer. I believe it came from the fact that I didn't know how to handle two textures and that the new growth would coil upon itself and tangle and do whatever else it wanted. Not to mention it would often be dry and my hair is dense so at that point unloved new growth could definitely keep any air from getting to the scalp. None of these things could feel good for the scalp I would imagine. Just my theory but it's consistent with the behavior of my hair and my scalps dislike of not getting air and moisture.

There is just way too much foolishness and ignorance wrapped up in this statement. At this point you should have just walked off, LOL.

I think it's great that we have forum to vent about these things...but why didn't you tell the woman how stupid she was being? Now she's just tralalala-ing off in the world like a time-bomb waiting to go off on another woman with natural hair. Maybe it'll be another member of forum and that member will come and create another thread about the same fool lol. Here....we already know why what she said was stupid and how she was doing a disservice to herself and to you. Meanwhile, you let her get walk away with the same backwards ideas.

In most cases you would be right. Some people just need to be enlightened. But I've known her for many, many years. And I can promise you she wouldn't have gotten it.

The smart thing would have been to end the conversation shortly after... "OMG! Girl, where have you been!"

Yep. Sounds like the creme is seeping through her pores. I had a person who I ADORE tell me she shed a tear for my hair. Because I cut it. -_-

You know what? Don't write people off, or count them out, even when they say dumb ish.

There was a chick on my FB page who posted one time: "Thank God for the healing power of a relaxer". When I looked on her page today, she was rocking a FIERCE TWA!

wow. even if you didnt curse her out, you still should have pulled out the "You are so so dumb".

i agree with electra. even if i dont tell people exactly why they are being ignorant douchebags, i'll still tell them they're being ignorant douchebags. maybe they'll reflect on their behavior maybe they wont but at least i won;t leave the conversation kicking myself for biting my tongue

Oh, one more thing, My scalp used to hurt/itch when I needed a relaxer. I have NO idea why. #confusedthenamug

the pain that you all were feeling is normal and is contributed to the fact the nerves in your scalp were experiencing a sort of "wake up" call from not having those caustic chemicals slathered on it.
