  • Did Oprah's Skin Get Lighter

wth? i stopped watching oprah for a few weeks and flipped it on today and i could of sworn her skin was lighter than it used to be. (think about color purple)
This woman is representin millions of black women, and she is using skin lighteners. I am so friggin disgusted. How dare! Maybe it was just today. but if u do a google image search on her name, you can see the difference in color. Last time i checked, when people lost weight their skin color stayed the same. Am I the only one who noticed this foolishness? Is it just the makup and the lighting? Are my eyes decieving me in my old age?

cant say ive noticed it...i have pictures where it seems my skin is a different shade. i just chalk it to lighting, differences in her makeup

Why was I thinking the same thing today. What made me notice, she was sitting next to a sister. Another thing that rubbed me about today's show(sex addicts) is Oprah act like she could not relate until she equated it with food. I thought she would tell the girl I've been there. Which she has admitted to. And go deeper into the skin-color issue.

I don't think you can say she is using skin lighteners without definate proof.

It's more than likely makeup application and new products and lighting, use of different films, lens, etc. Plenty of celebrities look much different in natural light (red carpet) than they do in the studio and on film.

aww maaan, i saw that show she did with dave chapelle..and i was like "woah!.. y does she look like that??"

i had a hard time paying attention to anything she was saying about "knowing where u come from..and finding strength within" and what not..lol
eveytime the camera focused on her, all i could think was "y does she look like that?!??"

maan, i know pple love them some oprah..but she cant tell me nothing looking like that.

i don't think she's lightening her skin....i think she's getting older!!! i mean on TV and magazine covers she looks FABULOUS....but whenever she does one of those "no make up" moments, she looks completely different.

i think it's taking more and more make up to fix this....and i heard one of my coworkers talk about how certain lighting reduces the look of wrinkles (un oprah related convo)

It could be the lighting and her makeup.

It could also be "seasonal" (in addition to the make up). In the winter I am "lighter" and in the summer about two shades darker *shrug*..

I hadn't noticed. I think it could just be the lighting and like another poster stated "seasonal". I know in the winter time it seems like my skin is much lighter than in the summer time.

Her skin did not get lighter, it is good make-up and great lighting. She admits that most sets are not for people of color and she has the best lighting out there. If you notice all people of color (black, hispanic, asian) have a certain glow when they are on her set. You will also notice that when she is on location, her 'glow' is gone and she has a more dull skin tone. For proof, check out pictures of her in South Africa or during her Hurricane Katrina footage taken from August. It is amazing what t.v. can do to a person's look.

Well, enough of the Oprah hate, you must admit, Ol' girl looks GOOD!!!

I'm a photographer and it's amazing how the right like can give you a different look. I'm a dark skinned woman and I have pics of myself that make me look light...almost see through. I'll post them later.

maan, i know pple love them some oprah..but she cant...

the lighting i'll give you - she has some crazy soft light filtration going on on that set, and i'm not hating for that. in my opinion, though, the makeup looks grotesque.

OP, i'm disappointed that you went all the way there with no proof. how are you just gonna make a grandiose claim like that, and then call the woman out for her damage to the black community with no claim? that's just not cool, and i'm not even a fan of her all like that.

people, we gotta stop jumpin to huge conclusions w/o takin the time to think. this goes for ANY topic.

It ALL depends on the lighting, and the quality of the photo. Come on, I mea- if she admitted to it, and we had an audio or an interview I would buy it, but come on....

The makeup contributed also. I mean shoot- in natural light I look like I have a yellowish tint to my skin but in lowlight I have a reddish tint, and in the electrical light I look caramelish. I also get kinda tan in the summer and can get a cocoish color. Dang. Consider the facts people.

She looks damn good for 52. She has the best hair stylists, brow artists, and make up people in the world and she keeps her body tight.

Anyway I'm not so shallow as to measure her worth as a black woman by how she instructs people to apply her makeup. I'm more impressed with the development of brand new houses she's managed to provide for the Katrina victims.

But then again, you still ain't "real" if you ain't nappy and black as tar. Right? <_<

Hey, but I have a question.... all the years that Oprah and Stedman have been together, why aren't they married? I heard they've been engaged for like a decade or something. Is he there for the money? What is it?

they're not engaged. she just chooses not to get married to anyone period, just like she chooses not to have children.

oprah has addressed this many times....she feels that "if it ain't broke...don't fix it"

if that's what she wants...nobody else should be concerned!

    once again....go oprah! :Cool_049:

I know for a fact that in her HARPO studio, the lighting is set for people of color. Oprah's mentioned that on her show on more than one occasion.

I think that it's mainly the lighting and make-up that she gets on the set. Plus she is getting older.

There's this weird phenomenon in my family that when people start aging they either get darker or lighter. It begins to happen to both men and women when they hit their early thirties. My sister turned from dark brown to really light brown to medium brown. The thing that freaked us out was when she didn't get a tan during the summer which is extremely unusual for her. My uncle had a dark honey skin tone in his forties. When I seen him five years later, he was pasty and pink. I was like Now he's returning to his regular skin tone. I'm just hoping that this won't happen to me when I get older. My grandma is light skin and now she's getting darker.

I just want to say I definetely wasnt hating on Oprah. The woman is lighter whether it be makeup/skin lightening/lighting/winter summer changes in skin/or whatever. And I just tried to change the topic of the post, but it wont let me change it so it shall be there 4 all of history.

"OP, i'm disappointed that you went all the way there with no proof. how are you just gonna make a grandiose claim like that, and then call the woman out for her damage to the black community with no claim? that's just not cool, and i'm not even a fan of her all like that.

when did i say she was damaging the black community??? Its not a huge claim, I am no makeup/lighting expert. So it seemed very reasoable to me that she was using somethin. But everyone else has let me know what the reasons could be for the color change in her skin.

    Off topic:
Why is it that "proof" has to be an official article or interview: dont we have eyes and thinking skills of our own? did y'all actually believe saddam had weapons of mass destruction when bush first said it?

you said in your original post: This woman is representin millions of black women, and she is using skin lighteners. I am so friggin disgusted. How dare!

therefore you implied that her "representin millions of black women" hurts the black community because she no longer looks as dark as you think she should.

instead of just saying "i think Oprah is using a skin lightening cream", you went off on tangent and just made the bold claim that she is.

this is reason #543 i'm glad i'm not famous. my skin has definitely lightened over the years (more than i care to admit) but there's this "blacker than thou" phenomena that's so prevalant in our community that it makes one fear not "keeping it real."

i would hate my every action and word to become suspect b/c it's just a shame.

I reckon it's probably lighting and make-up. As for the why not married? question if I had x millions I wouldn't be marrying either!! It's all MINE - MIIINEEEEE!!!!!!

Not a huge fan of Okra these days either ... but I did enjoy the Trinny and Susannah show
