  • Compliments And Encouragement.

I was in walmart with my sister earlier this week and I received a very unexpected compliment from another shopper. I was approached by a friendly young lady who smiled so big as she told me how she liked my hair. I must say, her compliment was just what I needed that evening. I'm normally on top of adding pictures to my fotki and commenting in the hair journals of others, but haven't been up for it lately. It's been raining here in FL a lot and my hair is going through this frizzy stage (this is my first summer natural), so I've not been feeling so cute.

The same young lady ended up in the check-out line behind us and we talked a little about forum and her hair which she was wearing a hat and I had to ask if she was natural. She mentioned that she is transitioning and not sure about bcing, but has been thinking about it. I suggested a few products and that she not get discouraged by others. I must say that I'm sorry I didn't at least exchange email addresses with her or at least ask her name. She is a member of forum and I hope she reads this entry and understands how much I thank her for her compliment.

I really appreciate this site and the interchange of encouragement that takes place here. So, thanks forum family!

    That's a nice story!

I was in the hair store a few weeks ago guiltily buying products I had no intention of actually using (this happens maybe twice a year) and I ran into another woman wearing what was confirmed to be a wash-n-go, who was doing the exact same thing.

We ended up trading moisturizing tips and molesting each others' hair (she made my day the way she was complimenting my wash-n-go), I told her about this site and we ended up exchanging phone numbers.

A guy friend commented that he liked my hair natural. We had been having a conversation about being yourself when you meet people. It is nice to hear that sort of comment from a guy. ^_^ Sometimes they just look and don't say anything. -_-

I was in Sallys the other day looking for a f.lat iron for my Mom. My hair was looking a hot mess (2 week braidout that needed to be washed). A girl came up to me and said she liked my hair and that I didnt need the tool. I smiled and told her it wasnt going anywhere near my hair....

Before school started up again, I was nervous of how people would react to my hair. I have a certain friend that is critical of EVERYTHING and really didn't want to hear it. But she loved it and everyone else! Everywhere I go people always comment on my hair. Alot of people didn't think I would really cut it all off, but I proved them wrong. I do have one problem though...I can't keep other people's hands out of my hair! Everytime they see me they gotta touch it! LOL!

I was in a beauty supply store the other day and ran across some comb looking tool that the packaging identified as a "twist comb." I just kept looking at it and decided to ask the young ladies at the counter what it was and how it was used. One didn't know, but a third sales clerk (wearing a ratty looking wig) said it was used to put in kinky twists. I'm like "Oh, ok," dispite the fact that I was having a hard time visualizing how it would be used.

Then sales girl #1 looked me and said "That's all your hair right?"

    Me: "Yep."

Sales girl #2: "You just twist it yourself?"

    Me smiling: "Yep."

Sales girl #1: "People pay to get hair like that...it's so pretty. It looks soft too, can I touch it?"

    Me: "Sure."

Sales girl #2 comes from behind the counter. "Can I touch it too?"

Me: "Sure." Ok...now customers are really starting to stare at us, but they're having a love fest over my hair so who the heck cares? Some guy is talking on a cell phone but can't take his eyes off us. I just smile and shrug at him. I also decide to flirt a little too, so I wink kinda sexy like. (Well I thought it was sexy anyway...) He just smiles back.

Now sales girl #2 is sporting a large gorgeous puff...kinda hard to tell if its hers. I'd been wanting to ask since I walked in the door. Since she's all up in my hair, I decide to ask "Is that all your hair?

Sales girl #2 beaming: "Yep...it's all mine. But it's not as soft as yours, what do you use in it?" I tell them I just use practically any water/glycerine based products for moisturing. At the moment, I'm using a Pro Line product.

Sales girl #2: "Maybe I'll try that...mine is soooo dry." I wish I had gotten a chance to tell her that golden blond hair coloring was probably the culprit, but some customers asked for help and took her away from my hair love festival.

Sales girl #3: Says something like, I wish I could get my hair to look like this as she walks away. Sales girl #1 also decides to get back to work. Oh well, my nappy hair love fest is over, but it sure was great while it lasted!

I work in a bank as a teller. I have a ton of regular customers who know me by name...and I've been getting a lot of positive compliments on my new natural look.

But the ones I was most happy about was not really the ones that were complimentry to me per se..but a regular customer who asked what was I doing to make my hair look so healthy in it's natural state. I had told her a few weeks ago about the "No Poo" methods that I had "discovered" on sites like this and others. She came in two days ago and told me she was doing that method on her own hair (which was in tiny long extentions) and on her daughters hair...She said already her edges looked like they were growing back , and her daughter isn't complaining about her scalp itch and her hair feels softer. I then gave her the web addresses for this site, Naturally Curlly, Qhemet, and Carol's Daughter.

Another customer whom I had never seen before asked about my hair. I gave her the whole story..She was someone who had burnt her hair all her life like I did. I told her as well , what I was doing, she was very interested, cause we talked about how awful pressing was, cause you had to worry about excersing and sweating it out....and spending money every two weeks, and the scalp itch...Well..I gave her my card and the same web addresses, plus my personal cell #..I get the feeling she's going to give being natural ago. And It feels good to possibly be a part of that decision for another black woman tired of being a slave to the pressing comb.

I did warn them that there is a side effects though...Product Junkieism.

i was afraid to show the guy i like my hair a few days after i did it BC. so, when he came over i had a towel wrapped around my head. he looked at me and said let me see you hair. so, i took off the towel and prepared for the worse (some people in my family already told me they didn't like it, so i didn't know what kind of reaction i'd get from him). he looked at it and went "AW," and smiled and ran is fingers through my hair. he loved it!! that made my day!!
i've also had some wonderful reactions from my friends and people i've encountered in public. they always say it looks so soft (which it is).

Well I just wanted to give a shot out to the young lady in Sephora (pentagon city mall) today she made up my face. I needed help bad (due to being a plain jane) and she loved my cut, she was trying to encourage me to keep it short because she like it so much, I told her that I cut it off because im going natural and pretty much starting over my (health) hair growth

She said I cant even picture you with long hair , I started laughin, crazy uh. The funny thing about it, is that i was in that same store a week or so ago before I cut it.

This lady who worked in the same place I interned for this summer complimented me on how wavy and beautiful my natural hair is (I wore a braid out). It really made me happy! Although that same night, my mom commented on how inappropriate nappy hair is for black women (huh?? and she's from W. Africa!). But yes, the compliments are very nice. I love it when I see other women with natural hair too- it's pretty empowering.

Friday, while I was out with my friends, I got lot of compliments during the evening on how cute I looked and how fly my hair was (I was wearing my first fluffy twistout). Of COURSE that filled my head up.

Today, I did the regular, co-washed, rinsed, combed through leave-in then a little gel, shook and out the door I went. I got a few more "your hair looks so cute like that" comments.

Even my SO is starting to look at me a little differently (like he actually likes the short hair).

It's going pretty well right now. Although, a white woman at work had the audacity to ask me if I had thought about doing something to make my curls looser...I had to ask her, "....and WHY would I want to do that???"

My BF's sister is a singer/actress and she performed a cabaret show last night and TWO photographers separately approached me and told me that they loved my look and wanted me to sit for them! (I don't think that they were come ons, I was with my BF.) I have NEVER had that happen before and I can't help but think that because my look is now natural that did it! ^_^

My co-worker told me she admired my ability to be unapolgetically me and that she wanted her daughter to spend some time with me so that I could rub off on her. She told me she wanted her daughter to keep her hair natural and know that she was beautiful just like me. She also told me that she was going to grow out her chemical fire cream and asked for help. I was very honored to be a role model for her daughter and I felt special that I inspired her.

I had one of my customers tell me that i wore this look well (he was gay, so it was a compliment not a come on) this was after having a horrible breakout occur on my face and not feeling attractive at all that day.

When I went to see my favorite Naijan beauty (who I hadn't seen in 6 months) to get my hair twisted, the first thing she said was "You cut your hair!!!" in a very accusatory, how dare you tone then told me to change the DVD and go to Dunkin Donuts to get the coffee after she braided my hair she bent my head back and said "No perm hair" I said uh no, no more relax.ers for me. "No, no perm your hair, keep it twisted and it come in nicer than before" (she doesn't speak english well) I was all ablush.

I had to give a compliment to one of the bank tellers who had the fiercest set of locs i'd ever seen, they were about waistlength and she had the top pinned with some hanging down and streaks of red, hot let me tell you, couldn't keep my eyes off. we couldn't start a hair fest because the branch manager was in direct ear shot

In WalMart, I was turning the corner to the condish aisle. I almost ran into this girl, and when she looked up she literally gasped... I said sorry cuz I thought I scared her or something. She said, OMG...Your hair is so gorgeous...She said it loudly, and I got a little embarrased...But it felt good

When I was getting on the elevator at work, there were three women already on. One said, Girl...your hair is really pretty...All the others chimed in...

Yesterday, the guy that I'm dating came to my house. While we were talking, he reached up and pulled my PHBB off...I was like "Dude!!!"...He said, I just want to play in your hair...It's so pretty...He dug his fingers down in my hair and massaged while we talked...

Friend: This is how I want my daughter's hair to be. Let me give you a baby.

    Me: LOL! No thank you

Friend: All you gotta do is carry it for nine months...you dont even have to take care of it, you can give it to me.

A male co-worker told me that he liked my hair ( i'm wearing it in twists) and I got a compliment from someone whose style I admire. A female co-worker wears her hair in these short funky but fly hair cuts I told her that she makes me want to cut my hair short and wear it burnt. She was like, you better not cut your hair. She said that she loved my hair and she wished she had the patience to wear her hair like mine. I was like WHAT! that made my day

...Was at a bacherlorette's party and two other sisters came in with natural hair... we connected immediately and of course complimented each others hair!

It was really a breath of fresh air in a room full of "fried, died and laid to the side" hair.

Although my fiancàƒƒà‚© is still a bit grumpy about the thought of me cutting my hair, he plays with the twisties a lot more than he ever did when it was relaxed.

I went in the deli portion of a grocery store near my job for lunch. Made my order to the sister behind the counter and she complimented me on my hair and asked who did it. I told her I did and she asked me if I did other peoples hair and I told her no. She seemed saddened that I didn't do hair professionally. I thought that was pretty nice and I never thought of doing anyone elses hair.

A friend of mine recently asked if she could touch my hair. I had it pulled back with a scarf. She felt it, smiled, and said, "I love seeing Black people with no p.erms."

A few days ago a white man stops me in the mall and says "wow look at all that pretty hair you have on your head" as he stared at my puff in amazement. I was a bit shocked!

Yesterday at work, a lady whispers that she ahd to ask me a question...here I am thinking my underwear is showing or something but she asks me if I had a "piece" on. I tell her that it was all mine and she couldn't believe it. She told me how beatuiful it was and how people pay money for weave afro puffs to acheive that. I still don't think she believed it was my hair but she did say it "fit me very well"!
