I'm trying to come up with a comment that won't offend anyone.
But this is starting to piss me off. I've been lurking on a couple of these pro-ana sites for years and truly believe that some people just say that they have an ED just to be apart of this online in-crowd. They act like this is a game.

Heh, if they choose to kill themselves then that's their life choice, more power to them. And if they want to look like 12 year old boys then that's fine with me, just leaves more men for us to attract.

    That's just it.
Being diagnosed with an eating disorder isn't a choice!
Nobody chooses to be f***ed up in the head.

Some people see pro ana/mia sites are nothing more than a chic diet club.

    Whatever it is, it's a dam.n shame!

Do you think its real though? Don't most girls with actual Eating Disorders deny they have one? Don't they usually just say they are trying to be healthy? These girls seem to embrace it.

I agree with you on the first tip, I think they're just some ditzy groupies.

Anorexia is just one of those things, I swear, I will never understand.
Is it just a form of OCD( obsessive complusive disorder)?

There are some groups that are real support groups like Something Fishy or Colors of Ana (for women of color).

I haven't been to the sites you've mentioned, but there are thousands of them. Yahoo groups purged a number of them some years ago. No pun intended.

If you are a concerned parent, you can monitor your children's viewing habits. Honestly, you are not going to "catch ana" from reading tips. If it's there, it's there. It can make someone who has these tendencies worse, but the average girl looking to lose 10lbs is not going to become anorexic no matter how hard she tries. Poor misguided children.

Some internet filters do block out pro-ED sites.
I can't access some pro-ED sites from work because the filter we have categorizes these as "violence" sites.

While were at it, let's force all of the people who use skin bleaching creams to stay in the sun all day! That'll show them!

Although you did not mean it, you probably offended a good number of people who are presently struggling with or who have overcome some type of eating disorder.

Psychological disorders know no color or economic boundaries. Black women, poor women, even men may struggle with such a disorder, but because the disease has the face of a privileged white girl, it makes them feel even more ashamed and alienated.

The reason why these websites are wrong is because they mislead people who DON'T have an eating disorder into believing "You too can be thin and beautiful if you follow these 10 easy steps." Those sites ignore the fact that people are using food and weight as a crutch to deal with their problems.

Why is it that if someone says "Janet Jackson is huge" and say that she has some unhealthy habits so many get all up in arms, ready to battle, but when someone attacks another group - a group with a bona fide DSM listed psychological disorder - for their unhealthy relationship with food, we're ready to pack them up and send them to another country?

To the board in general, please know that self-hatred comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Let's be kinder to one another.

i didnt mean to offend...but regarding Janet....again noone knows how healthy she is or what she eats...regarding these people...they are knowingly killing themselves....I mean...yeah people of all shapes/sizes are anorexic/bulimic ...people of all shapes and sizes are fat.....did i ever say that killing yourself through food is right??IT isnt whether fat or skinny(believe me i know my mom was overweight and depressed).....but why do i have to feel "sympathy" for them when OBVIOUSLY they are so self absorbed they dont see people on the street looking thin and dying, or see violence, famine in the world and only think about looking like the next kate moss...im not saying everyone doesnt do it...but heck we all need to sit back and be real with ourselves...if they want to get my sympathy...they need to volunteer at a shelter for people dying of AIDS..and see how to truly embrace life....ive dealt with a friend who was anorexic...and you can say "boo-hoo" all you want and say "you NEED help please my sistah let me help you"..."people love you"...but seriously the only thing thats gonna change their mind (FOR ANYONE, overweight, anorexic, drug addicted, violent etc.)is themselves...and SEEING the suffering and or blessings of other people to make them go "why am i so concerned with my body and killing myself when im so blessed"...just like if they were addicted to drugs....these people dont need my sympathy...they need a reality check, or for someone to actually go in that website and say "WAKKKEEEE UPPPPPPPPP"...and i dont think its simply a psychological thing from personal experience BUT AN ADDICTION as well...yes these people do know they are killing themselves..they arent idiots... but my friend told me how her body felt "renewed' whenever she purged, or how if she didnt do it she would feel "icky"and thats why it was so hard for her to quit.....as soon as she started working at a halfway house...she willed herself to eat you can bet that's right

but this is old...the only reason people were so upset about the Janet thing was because people were basically assuming she was a fat, unhealthy slob of a woman when we didnt even know what was going on in her life

ha ok im contradicting myself though cause i see your point...TO ALLL THE ANOREXIC/BULIMIC people IMMM SORRY...cause i would never put my friend on an island*though sometimes i was tempted*...i wasnt being serious...but GET HELP!

I see your point about reaching out to others and focusing outwardly. It can be frustrating to be around someone, especially someone you love, seeing them punish themselves when you can see how full their life really is or can be.

But then, this phenomenon is not limited to the eating disordered area. Many of us, myself include, have a hard time getting outside of ourselves and addressing the REAL problems we face.

Thanks for not taking my post the wrong way. The ideas you espoused are quite common, so I just wanted to get my two cents out there.

    What is wrong with you?

Nothing. If they want to look like Nicole Richie and buy into the media's sick standard of beauty then that's their stupidity. My friend goes to those diet sites and has emailed me some of them for diet tips, I think it's ridiculous. She's not anorexic or bulemic but I fear she might be borderline. I don't think she's psychologically messed up--she just goes overboard with the image of being super, super thin.

Not all of them are not just buying into anything, this is a serious disorder. It's quite possible that your friend does have a problem. It may start off as just an image thing, but can easily turn into something more serious. You say that you fear she might be borderline anorexic or bulemic...those are disorders.

I will never understand it either. My friend had anorexia (this is before she met me, now she eats all the time) but from what she tells me about her experience it was because she lived in a mainly white neighborhood, and she rejected her curves instead of embracing them. I still can't figure it out.

I agree. Not to disrespect people who have eating disorders (because I've seen how they ravage a person both physically and mentally) but when it comes to websites I really do think that there are a fair number of depraved people who lie so that they can have a sense of belonging with a group of people. I liken it to the character Jack in Fight Club; how he would go to support group meetings and lie his $$ off just so that he could feel like a real again. It's disgusting because by lying on these sites they're only contributing to the downward spiral of people who really do have eating disorders by posting encouragement and 'tips' <_<

    This is important:

    1. A friend ofmine did her master's thesis on pro-eating disorder websites. and she said that you should NEVER post the links to those because they may affect people differently. some people are repulsed and in others it may actually trigger an eating disorder. You also shouldn't discuss eating disorder "techniques" because you never know who's taking note.

    2. Eating disorders are serious. And even if you don't understand them, they should not be taken lightly. For some they are brain problems, mental illnesses, and the results of self-abuse. even if you don't get it, don't mock.

    3. Have a little humanity. These are *people* who have problems. Nothing is as simple as it may seem.
