Hello everyone please help im new and would like to know something. I am a 25 year old male and would like to grow my hair so i can be able to braid it and was wondering the best way i could go about this. I have not had a hair cut in over a 2 month. Ive only been to the barber to get the sides tapered so i could have a clean cut look. But one thing is i put a Duke texterizer in my hair. So i can get waves. Now my hair only looks good if i wear a wave cap and brush it or if i wash it out and curl it up with gel. Is this bad for my hair growth process? If so what is the best method i should use to grow my hair faster. Because in my mind it already took too long to get this length and i dont want to start all over by cutting it bald again. Please answer because there is not enough information out there on black mens hair and how to take care of it. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the board. I am going to try my best to regurgitate what I've learned from the site so far, and anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. At this site we do not advocate the use of texturizers or any other type of chemical relaxrs to alter the texture of your hair. I don't know that the weak chemical fire cream is bad for hair growth, but I do know for a fact that it breaks down your hair folicle. So---I don't think that would help you with growth. As far as the gel I don't think it should be too bad as long as it does not contain pure alcohol as an ingredient and I don't see anything wrong with the wave cap. Relaxr free hair--your hair would definatley be in its healthiest state.

By the way, hair growth is mainly determined by internal factors and genetics. Drink lots and lots of water and stay true to trying to eat healthy. What you put in definatley can determine the outcome of not only your hair, but your skin and entire body.

You would not have to cut your hair bald. I'm guessing you can also let it grow and cut off the textuirzer little by little, until it's all gone.

Um that's all I have for now. I hope it helps.

    nappirouts you did well

you should stop using the weak chemical fire cream it is a still a chemical process and that is not good for the hair you already grew.

you dont have to cut it off now but eventually you will.
try wearing comb coils (if the hair will coil) as a way to grow out what you have now. work at getting your hair and scalp healthy. by keeping you hair and scalp clean and moisturized.

    anyone else

Thank you both for your quick reply. I used the chemical fire when i wanted to get 360 waves. That was about 2 months ago. My hair has grown since then and it doesnt look chemically processed. Right now i use a pick and it looks like i have a small fro. I definatly will not be using any more chemical fires in my head. I have actually already been trimming it with scissors every now and then. I have been drinking lots of water, taking a multi-vitam. a day and focusing on what you have touched base on already. So hopefully i am well on my way to getting the desired change that im hoping for. 1 more thing. how long does your hair need to be inorder to get twists?

your hair should be long enuff for gel twists. for 2 strands i'd say at least 3 inches long.

well from my advice given in the "how do i grow my hair " forum, You cant grow ur hair lolol, all you can do is take care of it, stay away from harsh chemicals and petroleum based products, use protective styles such as braids, try to reduce breakage by not braiding too tightly, or combing too much. the rest is up to nature.
    good luck,
    Darkstar

p.s. i meant advice given to me.

Hey there my brother! I don't have much to add because the veterans have pretty much answered your question. I just want to say how proud I am of you for being courageous enough to post a message. Good for you!

Reminder: Stay away from the chemicals. It's excellent that you are taking a multi-vitamin everyday. As a black male it's important that you do so to combat heart disease. Also, try to cut back on fried foods if they are part of your diet. The trims are good because eventually you will trim the chemical out. Lastly, best wishes on your journey. And you thought I had nothing to add....
