congrats cinnamoni! hello to everyone else! i'm glad this thread is growing so

I'm still at 5 months and change. nothing's really happening except budding. oh, i am working on combining a few locs in the front and i may take them down (just along the hairline) to redo, but for now i'll wait. my hair is a little thinner in that area though.

i added a few pics, not sure if you've been by, but check em out! password is hair

are teenage locs suppose to shed? sometimes when I play with my locs, hair comes out

Hi all. I *think* I am still in the teen stage, even though I am 2 years in, simply because I have some locs that are solid and completely loced up (mainly in the underneath, back layers), and some that still have that twisted look. I can still actually split those apart on the ends if I try hard enough.

Like you, santoinette, I have some shedding. I mainly see it after washing or when I manipulate my locs more than normal. I don't see it as a problem because it has not hindered progress AND as I understand it, there's just a lot of little pieces of hair within the loc that would have shedded anyway were it not being locked up, so to speak.

I was thinking about doimg tat with some of my thinner ones on the front too, but I decided it was probably a better idea for those to be a bit smaller, so they'll be less pulling on my edges.

Plus if I took them down I would be SOL when it came to putting them back in.

    bump...

I'm 8.5 months in, and it's been slow going. I'm not going to trip and say that my hair is "soft" - it's really not, and I thought my locs would bud/mature a lot faster than they have! The ones in the front, where I always thought my hair was nappiest, are not sealed anywhere!

I'm a little confused now as to things I should be doing for my hair at this stage. I bought some Suave conditioners yesterday to dilute them for a leave-in. I was using olive oil or hot six oil mixed with a little water, and that worked okay (esp. during the summer), but my hair went back to being crunchy shortly afterward. I think I'm probably at a stage now where conditioner might be appropriate. I put the diluted suave on last night and woke up this morning with my hair looking a little better than it has recently.

I've been on the search for moisturizing agents and thought oil was a good way to go, but a recent post in here threw me off - basically, someone said that oils are sealants, not moisturizers, and that a water-based moisturizer is a better idea. But lots of people are using oils as moisturizers, I thought. Maybe I misread, but that made me think maybe trying something like suave is a better idea.

I do pretty much all of my maintenance myself because the folks around here are either too expensive or will try to use Blue Magic in your hair (at a "natural" salon!) I worry if I'm doing things right and exactly how far away I am from having fully locked hair. I wonder if I play with my hair too much - I'm not as bad I was in the beginning. In addition to being in an awkward loc stage, my hair is also at a really awkward length. It's not short enough to look purposely short/funky anymore, esp. in the front.

Another annoying hair tendency is that my hair seems to ALWAYS want to fall forward, like I have loc bangs or some kind of loc bowlcut/mushroom hairstyle from the early '90s. On some folks this is probably cute, but it is not a good look for me. Even when I have a headband on, the front pieces will bend forward. Sometimes I pull the front part back with a rubber band, but then I look like I'm trying to pull off a teenage hairstyle. Anyone else experience this?

yeah this happens to me as well.

I Iike the bowlcut/mushroom look, but sometimes I hate that my hair is my face all time, so I put the headband on, but then I give my head a rest from the headbands, and bobby pins( somtimes, I twist a couple in the front on each side, and pin them).. Right now I styled my hair in two ponytails just to keep my locks out of my face.

I'm at the 9 month mark. I have several in the back that are locked. The top part of my hair and the sides are taking the longest to do something-like others, still have the braid pattern and curly q's in those areas.

I wash every other day (if I go longer my scalp itches like made) switching between a bar of black soap and an almond shampoo. I use oil after I wash, and don't really style due to the length.

i'm close to the year mark now and my hair is definitely loc'ed up. i still have some little curlies on the ends but for the most part the twist pattern is gone, and most of then have condensed. i retwist maybe once a month or whenever it moves me. i have YET to do any styles whatsoever, although i've been wanting to. i also just bought my color for my one-year anniversary...it should be BLAZIN. i thinki'm going to try to flip the ends up soon...

YAY! I can post in the teen loc thread now!

As for my hair, i just over 6 months. Its been a love/hate relationship, and alot of learning of what is importance to me (appearance wise). My locs fall into their own shape, which im loving right now, Im scared that when they grow out they will fall into another funky shape...lol.

i have a couple of locks that fully locked (minus the ends). the twist pattern has pretty much faded, esp. after a fresh retwist. i think my locs may end up having curly ends (which is pretty cool) or maybe not.

did the ends take long for most people to loc?

I think I am approaching my 7th month mark!!! I cannot wait until I reach 1 year! So far I have what seem to be some firm locs but there are still many that have not firmed up yet -the ones at the hairline seem to take the longest for me and also near to the back of my neck. I have alot of frizziies going on but I try to wrap the loose ends around the bases of the locs that have it the most.

I am enjoying my Sisterlocks journey so far- just want my whole entire head to be locked so that I can have some hangage!!!

I've got teen locs too...and a lot of shedding. Some are gnarly, and lately I've been getting the most annoying balls of hair at the end of the loc. I just clipped a dime-sized one cuz I couldn't take it anymore!

I'm in my 7th month and my locs are finally starting to look the part -they've been thickening and firming up and hanging better. I just did a retwist and it looks and feels great, plus I can see a little growth. I'm hoping by my birthday in June I'll be fully locked. With spring here I'm starting to catch the style bug, thanks to you lovely ladies with albums and vids who have put me on to so many different style options.

I'm really feelin my locs right now

16 Months checkin in! I'm finally able to get a nice little pony tail that doesn't look shrunken. Locs are so thick that I can't wrap those scrunches around but once. Loving my colors. Life is great!

    YAY!

Great thread! My pre-teens are 6 1/2 months old. Most of my ends are sealed and they are starting to condense a bit. I've got mad frizzies and they are long enough now to fall in my face a bit. My mom is getting used to my locs and I am very proud to say my dad is finally coming around! This weekend I caught him playing with my locs a couple of times! I think I may be almost ready to post some pics...we'll see...

I wash my hair once a week and I was using oil after I wash but I've discovered my hair doesn't like it. Now I use conditioner with a bit of castor oil in it. My hair is responding better to that for now. I am planning to get partial highlights this spring to hide a few of my grey hairs or should I call them bright silver crazy things! :P This journey is absolutely wonderful and I wouldn't change a thing!

It'll be one (1) year for me at the end of this month. WOW! I just realized that. Most of the back is sealed, however, the top and sides are doing thier own thing.

I'm going into my 11th month. Almost a year soon! So I'm a teenager now. My hair is definitely loc'ed. I see no twist pattern whatsoever. My ends are not sealed, which I like. I have one loc that is sealed, but then again it's like a hair ball on the end that is not loose enough to pull off, but not completely sealed to the loc. I have all sorts of new hair fuzz growing in, in odd places between locs. It's all good. I need the extra hair, lol. I latch for maintenance, usually random locs that have grown in a good bit. I may do my whole head like every 6wks. I've finally combated the dryness. I started adopting long rinses for moisture. I also do daily rinses to get my hair from a matted bed-head look, so they can hang, and I can style them. I wash my locs 2-3 times a week. I usually wash with suave biobasics conditioner. That stuff is really good for my hair. I use their shampoo every other week. I am trying a lot more new styles with my added length, and I am just enjoying them even more as the time goes by.

I would consider myself to be in the teenaged stages---I'm 8 months in and I know they ain't babies no mo'... I remember when my locs were just twists and how excited I was about embarking on my journey. I still feel the excitement but I'm a little more settled now. I realize it's not going to come over night and most days I still feel like I'm not a 'real dread' ! I love the freedom that I've found with my routine and my LOC JOURNEY really just became MY JOURNEY... I love to think about what my locs will look like at this time next year..... Ooooh, aahhhh.....
