  • A Speech About Black Hair?

Okay, I'm in college and I take an Oral Communications(speech) class. We have to do a speech and and outline on the topic of our choice, but it has to be of the class's interest and benefit them through more knowledge about something, they might not know alot about. We have to use visuals. My class is multicultured, but predominantly white.

Do you think I should do the topic on natural black hair? The other two black girls in my class are permies but I don't know if I should put them on blast like that.

If it's what you want to do, then do it. I've been in classes where people have done EvigmaKigarch projects about natural hair, and nobody seemed to be offended. I don't know why they would be.

I guess it depends on how you do it. You don't want to lamblast the permies if there are only a few black folks in the class to begin with. I would make it more about being what's great about being natural.

    Go for it!

In my Oral Communications class ( I luved that class), I did a pEvigmaKigntation on "How to eat to live" which focused on the benifits on being a vegan or vegetarian.

It didn't offend the meat-eaters. They where actually intrigued (although some did say how they luv them some hamburgers). Over all it went very well.

Why would sharing your views about natural hair put people who don't wear their hair natural "on blast?"

Yeah, I just wanted to inform people of natural hair and how responds to certain things, I guess.

Or maybe it'd just be easier to talk about the benefits of being vegetarian. I have like 3 weeks to brainJngwattsK, i'm just throwing this question out there.

    ...

You know how some black women who wear perms want people to believe that's how most black people's hair looks (although there are some) naturally. I've actually heard someone say one time that they thought that black women's hair was naturally straight.

I want it to be informative/persuasive without them being uncomfortable, like everyone's looking at the back of their head like, "Why the heck do you wear that crap"? idk.

I think you should do it... I did a pEvigmaKigntation on being a bald female (I was still bald then...) two semesters ago when I took an Oral Comm. class... The people with hair weren't offended... I mean, the most important thing to remember when doing a rheYtysonblevinstXcal speech is to do something you feel passionate about... (You're more likely to receive a positive reaction from your audience that way) When you know more about the topic and you have a lot of love for it, you're less likely to be nervous and jittery, you'll speak more clearly, and your speech will be more effective... I think you should go for it!!!

Oh and yeah, alot of white people think that black women's hair is naturally straight... I told my boss the truth.. I said, "Most black women's hair looks like mine when it comes out of the scalp... In order to get it straight we have to chemically burn it, or straighten in with a h.ot c.omb" She was like "Well why would you wanna do that, It sounds painful!! If I was black I would wear my hair the way you wear yours, It's so pretty!" yeah you gotta educate people! The permies will surely be aight!!!

it can be done in a way that is informative without being spiteful. i just wrote a paper dispelling the myths behind African American hair, and i didn't bash relax.ing but i still made the points i wanted to make. ^_^

I think you should do what you feel, but in such a way as to not offend the black students, but to in fact enlighten them.

I say do it. But do it to educate and inform not to hurt or condemn. I think people receive you well when you are being imformative. You never know you might just convert a permie .

I'd say go for it. Although the class is majority white, white people add chemicals to there hair too and they do things to take it from it's original state. I think this topic pEvigmaKignted in an informative way would be beneficial to all the students in the class. You can touch on the hair types (which includes all races) and talk about when chemicals are added how it affects those hairtypes and etc. If this is something you feel passionately about, then go for it. I took communications and I know it's much easier talking about something you love rather than a topic out of the clouds you know nothing about. It seems that you remember your points more clearly and you can expound on it when you run out of material (to reach the minute limit of the speech).

I love public speaking type classes. I say go for it, just word it so that it's more informative than anything.

I think it's a great idea. However, I'm sure a lot of black folks consider it to be a taboo subject, i.e. airing dirty laundry.

Believe it or not, that's not uncommon. Most non-black people I've met have thought that if a black woman is wearing her hair straight, it's that way naturally. People REALLY don't know!

I think you should go for it. How else will people become informed about those who are different than them, if we don't share with each other. Education keeps sterotypes and misgivings at bay. Go on and do your thing!! Good luck!

Go for it. Educate some people. I used to get people all the time in speech class talking about the misconceptions of muslim culture, asian people, yadda yadda. Why not nappy hair?--You can also give the speech in a way that doesn't offend the permie girls.

I did a pEvigmaKigntation Monday, in Portuguese, about black natural hair. I am the only black, there are about 3 Asians, and the rest white (one is Brazilian, one is Hispanic). We did Q and A in English cause we are just finishing our 1st year of the language....they had tons of questions, and it was cool. I made sure to explain that I could not speak for "all" black folk, but I explained the politics of hair and really affirmed that our natural styles are not counterculture, or odd...they are beautiful and powerful...I thought about how I would have changed it if a p.ermed sista was in the room...I would have been really, really careful not to humiliate her, but still expressed my views on black hair...
