I added a few new pictures to the end of...

Great pics, jet! I've always loved your album, and now you've got me thinking seriously about locking! In fact, I have a set of twists in now that I hope to..... but, I've got a few questions first, if you would be so kind...

About how many twists did you start with to get your current loc size? I'm sure it will be different for each head, but I was hoping for a ballpark estimate, if you can remember it.

What do you use for retwisting? How long do you keep the clips in afterwards? And, do you let them air-dry (if so, for how long?), or use a blowdryer (also for how long?)

Lastly, how did you achieve the last style pictured in your album? Your hair's so thick I can't figure out what's holding up the front!

That's it... your album has so much information in it that I don't need to look anywhere else!

No problem at all Ewuradwoa!! You know I love to help. Especially when it comes to making such a wonderful decision like locing...congrats in advance!! Okay, let me get to all your questions here...

    1. About how many twists did you start with to get your current loc size?

I started with about 150 twists. I undid a couple in the top at some point but I can't remember when, so it's somewhere between 150 and 154 now. But I'm pretty sure I counted after all that...yeah, I did, so yeah, it's 150 at last count.

    2. What do you use for retwisting?

In the beginning (I'm talking like I've been locing for years, lol), I used olive oil, then olive oil mixed with aloe vera juice, now I use nothing. I put a very small amount of caster oil throughout my hair after I wash or wet it, so I guess you could say I use that, but I don't use any substance on it when I'm actually retwisting (did that make sense?).

    3. How long do you keep the clips in afterwards?

I only used clips once, and I was like, later for that. That time I left them in until my hair was dry, I'm sorry I can't remember exactly how long...I think it was overnight. Now I just twist 'em (or palmroll 'em rather) and leave 'em, no clips required.

    4. And, do you let them air-dry (if so, for how long?), or use a blowdryer (also for how long?)

Yes, I let them air dry after I towel dry them with the smooth side of a baby towel. After I towel dry them they drip for a few more minutes then the wetness isn't really noticeable or annoying, I just can't lay down right away. After that, it takes about oh, four or so hours I would say? More or less around there. Probably longer, but I just don't really notice any wetness after that amount of time. They seem to dry quicker if I go outside after wetting them. I recently twisted all my locs together and soaked them wet them to set them (pics are coming soon in July!) and I had my soft bonnet dryer on all night on the "cool" setting. I had it on for six hours, and they were pretty dry. I left the twists in for another couple of hours though, so I can't say that definitively, but yeah, around six hours under the dryer for a style (WOW! That sounds like a really long time when I type it, lol). But yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about drying time, it's really not that noticeable, at least for me. I can wash or rinse my hair and bounce like nothing happened.

Oh wait DUH, you were wondering about after I retwist, huh? :P Well, I guess the answer's still the same though, except I wash, retwist, and bounce, so yeah, you can say I air-dry exclusively when it comes to retwisting. Actually, they're pretty dry by the time I finish retwisting; retwisting seems to kinda squeeze all the water out of 'em pretty good.

    5. Lastly, how did you achieve the last style pictured in your album?

LOL!! I didn't realize y'all couldn't make that out...I just put about three or four bobby pins up in there somewhere until I liked what I saw, nothing special. That's my staple style these days!

Hope that covers it for ya Ewuradwoa!! So glad you enjoyed the album!! Keep on coming back, because it's only gonna get beter from here, I promise you. And again, CONGRATS and good luck with your near-future locs!!! I can't wait to see them, I know they're gonna look GORGEOUS on you; you and your hair are ALREADY so beautiful.

Thank you so much, jet! I'm taking notes, and I'll be sure to post up pics as soon as I have something promising. Although I should probably put up the baby locs so you can approve them first

Your answers were really helpful! I only have about 116 twists, but I keep touching them and they seem to be a good size already; I don't think I could make them any smaller! I think my hair's not as dense as yours, though, so that's probably why. Although I hope they turn out like yours - you've got the Lauryn look down pat!

Here's a pic of how they look now - thoughts?

OMG thanks SO MUCH for all the lovely comments guys, my heart is straight WARMED over here!!!!! So glad you guys are enjoying this journey with me, I really can't express it. (And LOL y'all feepee and Lady Libra, why am I the same way?? Don't EVEN feel bad!! *wink) And Nati you KNOW I'ma have to call you out...girl you almost made me cry (both because of emotion and because of laughter) with your beautiful post. Das what it's all about, encouraging the newbies!! And FINALLY getting to enjoy my real natural hair after so many years of being told it was unacceptable (and believing it)...you picked up the right emotion Nati, pure unadulterated JOY.

And YAAAAAAYYYY for you Ewuradwoa!!!! Your twists look FABULOUS!!! Those are gonna hit the Lauryn look right one the head even more than mine!!! (Thanks for THAT compliment BTW, ANY and ALL comparisons to Lauryn are suprem honors in my book!! ;-D) 116 sounds like a wonderful number of twists to start with, sometimes I wish some of mine were a little bigger. I am just LOVING THICK LOCS THESE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy I started mine kinda thick-ish I'on know what to say. I was kinda worried for a minute thinking I might not like 'em, but that QUICKLY passed...so yeah Ewura, this'll be a decision you won't regret, I assure you.

    Thanks again everyone!!! :-)

Thanks so much thighs and Khardelya!! As for my glasses thighs, they're Nautica, in case that helps you find these exact ones. They have plenty like 'em in Lens Crafters and places like that though.
