    * * So how do you get the semi...

Oh sorry, I just jumped up in the thread w/out reading your other posts. If you want the semi-afro look then you should just use the pick to lift the roots. Like slide the pick into your hair right against your scalp, and lift it up until you're mid-way up. If you lift it all the way up until it's out (i.e actually pick your hair), then you'll get a fro but it won't have that curled look you want. So make sure you just lift (bring it up midway).

I see now that Im going to have to get this done professionally. So if I pick the hair to much than I would have to start over with new twist and wait another week?

    * * I see now that Im going to...

You could print out the picture and give it to the braider so he/she knows exactly what you want. If you pick the hair too much, you would have to start over again with new twists because the curls would be pulled out of your hair. You could just wait like two days but the longer you leave the twists in, the better the twist-out, and the longer the twist-out lasts. I guess a lot has to do with texture. Hair that is really nappy and kinky, kinda like Macy Gray's, will probably hold a style longer than hair that's kinda silkier like Cree Summer's (hippie girl from A Different World).

Hey do you think I could get the desired style by having the stylist use the current braids i have in now or no just use twist that you guys are talking about.

I think you could totally get the desired style with a braid-out instead of a twist-out. I wanted to suggest that but I thought maybe you'd prefer to do it the twist way. I've found that braid-outs last longer than twist-outs and the curly look is more defined.

So what should my procedure be. Or should I just go straihgt to a stylist?

    * * Hey do you think I could get...

If you used the braids you have in now it would be a "braid-out" and look kinda different from a "twist-out", which is what she has in the picture.

Do you know how to twist your hair like this? two-strand twists
If you do, then you could twist your hair in twists a little bigger than that. You could leave them in from one night to however long you want. You can take them out after 1 night if you want, but the longer you leave them in the longer your "twist-out" will last. After you take them out you can use a pick to "lift" them so that the parts dont show and it looks more like and afro. You would use the pick only about half the length of your hair (or less).

If you dont know how to do twists like in the pic above, then just take the picture you like to a stylist. They could twist your hair and have you sit under a dryer for a little while to set it. Then they would take down the twist and "lift" it for you with a pick. I guess it would last 1-2 weeks depending on if you cover it at night. HTH!

    * * Ok. So you say it might look...

    Depends on what you like.

You can take out your cornrows and "lift" it a little so that you don't see your parts, and see if you like it. Someone mentioned earlier that cornrows stretch your hair, so your hair might not be as afro-like as the girl in the picture.

Yeah I thought of that to. My hair usually looks kind of straight when I take out the braids. So what do you suggest? Because I want my hair to look as close to the desired style that im talking about.

    * * * Yeah I thought of that to. My...

I would suggest you take the picture to a stylist. Watch how they do your hair, then next time you might be able to do it yourself. Whoever did your cornrows probably could do the style in the pic on you.

Hey my hair does exactly what you would like to do. If you want your braid out to look somewhat what a twist out would like like then first spritz your hair with some water or a water based conditioner...just a little. Don't spray too much. The water will activate the hair into reverting back into its non-stretched texture. So spray the hair a little and wait about 2mins and then take a wide tooth comb and stretch from the base to about 1/4 to 1/2 percent of the hair length. Then using your hands you can lightly pull your hair out a little to creat more puffiness. I honestly don't believe that you should have to pay someone $60 to do this to your hair right now since you can experiment with the braid out. good luck.

Are the pictures of your fro taken after you take your cornrows down? Just wondering. I actually think it looks cool. No shame in wearing your fro out in public.

I would say something..but Imma be a good girl. Don't beat me, Nappitivity.

Yeah I took my braids out this morning and wash them with no shampoo just condish. Now im on the way to get these 2 strand twist. Hopefully i dont have to wear them like that long because i dont care for that look as much. Do you think I have to keep them in for a whole week before untwisting them?

You don't have to keep them a whole week. I don't know about anyone else, but my twistouts don't last more than a day if I take them out too soon.

Plus, you might actually like twists. They look cute on guys. At least I think so.

Slim i dont know if you have taken your braids down or not but you could just rinse your braidout really quick without manipulating it to get rid of the staight crimped look and get a more curly froish look

Yes Jtsupa I have taken them down. I actually have my hair in twist now. I kind of like the way the look when I first got them but after sleeping on them for one night they seem to look all wild. I just cant wait to take them out so I could rock the twistout fro look You can see the pictures on fotki.com

hey bro...first of all...WELCOME...i was wondering why this thread jumped at neck-breakin speed!

but what do you mean lookin wild? like frizzy, fuzzy? do you tie your hair down at nite? it kinda reduces fuzziness for me and when they look smooshes i either use a spray bottle and spritz water on them or let the shower water hit the twists and squeeze dry by and and with a towel.
