Hey ladies Im a guy with braids about the lenght to the bottom of my neck. I have been wearing braids for about one and a half years and looking for something new.I was wondering could you ladies help me. I saw a person with these locks that sort of look like dreads but not quite real dreads. They look like a puffy locks or sort of a lock fro. Could you ladies please give me a hand with some sort of procedure to get that look. Oh yeah nothing femine, im straight as they come

    Hi there,

Was the guy wearing 2 stand twists? I've seen guys wearing those and did a double take, because I'm not used to seeing guys wearing anything other that cornrows, locs, or loose hair. Maybe he had 2 strand twists and did a twist out.

Welcome slimneverdies! I think we need some more :Male: energy on this board.

Like inkysphinx said they were probably two-strand twists or a twist-out, which is a style that can be achieved by unraveling the twists. Did the guy's hair look like this?

You should also check out the Styles Workshop board.

No it didnt look like this guys. It look almost like he had a full afro that 3/4 of the ends were sectioned like a puffy dreadlock.

those two strand twist that appear in the picture dont look bad at all. But I was looking for a more full puffy looking twist. the hair stands up like a picked afro and none of the hair stands up.

actually i've seen a lot more guys wearing twists lately. i wonder if it's because they're looking for something new or if they're locing...

slimneverdies - kinda sounds to me like the guy was sporting a twist-out fro. of course i could be wrong cuz i didn't actually see him. you can always ask for bigger twists, too, you don't have to get the smaller-sized ones that the guy in the pic above has.

    LOL yall tripping...

    Here is a better shot.

Was it like this but a little more seperated at the roots? it could have been a washed twist out and his hair seperates into sections.

or this... i think these are seperated finger coils.

    vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv vvv

This is for the ORIGNAL fans of Gary!

Yeah ladies!! thats exactly what im talking about. The seperations are a little bit less and bigger coils though. Tell me how do you get this sort of look?

Yeah ladies!! thats exactly what im talking about. The seperations...

i know.. i know... Im da ISH!* J/K

Ok what you do is take your finger and pull off a little section of hair. then you twist it around your finger.rinse, repeat, wax on, wax off. lol the more hair that you pull off into the section, the bigger the coil will be.

now a reminder, depending on the texture of your hair it MIGHT NOT look just like his does in the picture. He has those really tight coils anyway for his natural hair and he does not manipulate it much with picking it out or braiding it. just keep in mind that your hair might not coil like theirs does.

oh, it might also help to use a little aloe vera gel (AVG) to hold the coil. a little can go a long way but like i said, it would prob work best if your hair already is tightly coiled.

It would also help if you had some pictures of you and your hair (im lookin out for yall ladies! lol )

And we would LOVE to see the end result.

Hey NappilyMe I guess they are seperated finger coils. is there some special transition i must undergo to achieve a similar look to these coils from the braided stage that im in right now. I want mine to be a bit more thicker and a little less coils.

all u have to do is twist your hair in two strand twists like the first pics let it dry and untwist them i usually wash my hair first let it dry a little bit and as im twisting add some elasta qp mango butter for moisture. hope that helps

    * * Hey NappilyMe I guess they are seperated...

    lol read the above post!

Adding: you can coil them, rinse them out (just rinse your hair while you wash your **** in the shower.. dont shampoo or nurffin like that just let the water hit them), Blot hair dry, let the rest air dry.

when fully dry take your fingers and seperate the coils.

for more volume, Use your fingers like you would a afro pic and lift your hair up from the root (scalp) this give you the little afro on the bottom but curlies on the end look

all u have to do is twist your hair in...

This would give a more crinkled look to it. I think he wants the afro/curlie look

Ok ladies you have help me alot but confused me all the same. That seems like a process that I woulnt be able to perform myself. When you talk about the texter of my hair its a funny thing. Because when I take my cornrows out and wash my hair it has a semi straight curl/ nappy look if you know what i mean. its not exactly what i would consider to be kinky. When I figure out how to post a picture I guess I could put a couple of pics on here.

    * * Ok ladies you have help me alot...

you can do it yourself, your have some one do it for you, dont fear the fro just do it! lol

This is the thing about cornrows, when you put them in, you are streatching your hair. It may take a few washes for your hair to really snap back into your true texture (if it dont when ya warsh it)

If you want to fro it out for a few days and then see what you are working with after a few washes, i suggest you wash your hair with conditioner (if you have a problem with dry hair)

Yes you heard me right. wash with condtioner. it cleans it just as good as shampoo (we call it no poo-ing) but it leaves more moisture in your hair.

I say you post a picture of your so freash and so clean afro.... that way the nappy docs can help you out op:
